I use the boots after sun lotion with mozzie repellant and their own repellant spray (in the yellow tin, not deet) and that usually works, bar the odd bite.

This sounds weird, but the best way I've found to stop bites from itching is to dip a teaspoon in very hot water and touch it to the bite a few times. Obviously, be careful not to hold it there too long or you'll burn yourself (are you listening mother?!) but do hold it there as long as you can bear. It really does stop the itching for about 4-6 hours. In the summer, we have bird mites from nests in the gutters / roof and I can have about 100 bites at any one time, this really helps (although is quite time consuming and looks to others as though I have a significant masochistic tendancy).

thanks all, living in the north of scotland I have skin so softly for the midges.. so i'll remember that, and good call on the antihistamines - i'll take them too as they handy for the itch even if doesn't prevent them

ooh the hot tea spoon - i know when i get them bad that i'd try anything to lessen the itch/pain from scratching so i'll bear that in mind!

    Hi hairbrain05

I too have been bitten many times by the dreaded mozzies

The female mosquito bite at dawn and dusk in order to produce their eggs .

The best way of preventing is to cover yourself in Tee tree Oil.

Spray your room as you leave for the evening with mozzie spray & burn cintrinella candles.

If you do get bitten then the best cure for the itch and kill the bite is this .:)

There's Avon skin so soft shower gel that apparently has something in it.

    Just to be clear:
it's Avon Skin-so-Soft dry oil body spray in 'original' fragrance - nothing else.

    It has multiple uses:

and although I've used it for almost 20 years (through lots of product changes) I would never rely on it as my only mozzie protection.

You right about the eggs, they need the protein from blood but there are many types of mossies that bite during the day for instance the Aedes aegypti mosquito in Asia, which is active all day and carries Dengue fever.

Fortunately, I don't react to bites but my DH finds insect repellent wipes very successful and easy to use. He got his in Aldi but they are generally available.

We also have one of these 'click it' things from Boots which is good for preventing itching afterwards.

And we have an Aspivenin vacuum pump but Boots don't seem to stock them any more.

And if all else fails then have a G&T as the quinine in the tonic will help!:rotfl:

on a previous thread they said to shower using Original Sauce Lemon and then use the avon skin so soft. I've also got those zappit things. Ordered from Amazon but they are also in B&M or home bargains.

I would only do all this for european countries. If I was going to Africa it would be different.

I must be gourmet mossie food because they eat me alive if I don't use this:

    http://www.chemistdirect.co.uk/mosquito-milk-twin-pack_1_160523.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=&utm_campaign=EN%20|%20PLA%20|%20Travel&utm_content=sMiIGcOmg|dc_pcrid_23409109378

It's fantastic stuff. My mum discovered it in a chemist in Gran Canaria one year when they were getting badly bitten and Jungle Formula didn't stop them. Some large Boots stock it, but it's cheaper at Chemistdirect. I recommend it to everyone who asks and everyone loves it.

Its a glass bottle with a roller ball on and you just roll it along the skin. It smells nice, lemony like citronella. A swipe down both arms and legs and you're good. I have NEVER been bitten when using this. I can't recommend it highly enough.
You had me at your proper use of "you're".
