What a load of old rubbish. And that's being polite.
UK Customs duty is completely different to import VAT. See http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/customs/tax-and-duty.htm for *actual* info.
Your trolling skills seems to be weakening by the day. Are you really going to persist or will you get bored and go outside and enjoy the rest of your summer holiday from school ?0 -

Its all merged into one for the purpose of the couriers invoice. as the courier would be hit with Import Duty and Import VAT. I import all the time0 -
earthstorm wrote: »Not True, how this works is the sender posts the item, this is placed in a shipping container and when it reaches the UK, you may be lucky in that the container your item is in does not get stopped for a search. If it does get stopped then the courier is charged by Customs, some couriers will deliver the item and invoice later and some will not release the goods too you until you pay the invoice.
Its a simple fact the courier has been charged duty on you item and now they want this money from you. why should the courier be out of pocket.
I have a wholesaler in the USA and i am always told and aware that you may be liable for customs charges when they enter the UK.
I was hit with a £500 customs bill 3 years ago, touch wood nothing since.
Sigh. I suspect your appearance here is not as random as it should be.
Let me correct you. FedEx is an express courier, whilst they do sub contract to ocean services they are primarily (read as 99+% by volume) an express air freight company.
Express freight submits a digital declaration to customs along with a description of the goods - this is then assessed and if they wish to look at a package they will request it to be pulled. If the values themselves exceed the threshold the charges are levied 'virtually', without being removed from the aircraft container so it doesn't work the same as standard post or ocean freight.
The make up of the fee will be proportionally based by the commodity within, some with a low tariff will result in vat making up the majority, others, say for example tobacco will have a larger percentage of the fee levied attributed to duty.0 -

just because you 'import all the time' does not make you knowledgable (I love how you were critical of MSE users in a thread about trading standards and yet come in here with a non industry based piece of 'advice').
The courier invoice will detail duty for the commodity, the vat at the applicable rate and the clearance/advancement fee for the shipment - customs levy their charges based on declared value of goods and the transportation fee of the goods to get them to destination.0 -
I had a courier 'customs/import' invoice after they delivered some stuff.
Ignored everything and they eventually went away.0 -

You can choose to do this if you wish. But if its in debt collectors hands they'll keep adding fees and the debt will get bigger.
Depends on your circumstances and the amounts involved, certain thresholds are merely written off by the courier companies0 -

They may have gone away, but you may find they remember you if you try to use their service again. Just a heads-up.0
