Fed ex charging me money

Please Help!

I recently got married and received a greeting card via fed ex from my friend in America. Someone signed for the package on my behalf. Once week later fed ex have now sent me an invoice for £28 pounds which they are stating I should pay the duty and tax on the card that was sent to me. Please help - I don't belive I should be paying this and don't have the funds to do this either. Are they allowed to do this? :(((

Kind Regards,

Furkan

£28 for a card? I'm sure there's more to this.

Was there a customs form? What was the value / type of parcel? Was it just a card, or a box?

You shouldn't have to pay customs duty or import VAT on a greetings card. Tell Fedex to do one. Unless there was actually something else with the card, in which case, depending on value, you might well have to pay this. Are you sure it was just a card?

? first you say its a card, then you say its a package.

Very true. I doubt you'd have to sign for a simple greetings card either. I suspect this 'package' actually contained a gift.

  • It was a greeting card and a photograph. The person put a value of $30 on the package. Sorry I should have stated this in the beginning. The charge states it is 17.53 for disbursements out of the scope of EU VAT and 10.50 clearance Administration Charge Vatable at 0%.

They then proceeded to give me an invoice slip. I shouldn't be lible to pay this - I didn't enter into a contract with them, no did I even sign for the package.

Should have put value $0.00 and gift.
Ask them if they can waive it ,however I think you may have to pay up.
  • But why, when I'm not in a contract with them?

    The sender should have.

Ask the sender to pay it.

It isn't a contract law issue as the fees relate to import duty/taxes which are levied by the government and being collected on their behalf by the courier company.
