5 month overdue CC charge

Hi,
Found out today via online banking that I've just been charged for rail tickets I bought back in November 2004. Whilst I should have realised that the money hadnt hit my card last year, it's still a shock to have a bill for £70 here and now!

Does anyone have any tips/similar experiences in this type of situation? Is it worth complaining to the rail company, even though I suspect they'e within their rights to take the payment now?

Thanks for any help.

I think that you have to pay up unless the transactions are not genuine.
You don't state whether these were credit card or bank account transactions but ultimately, you bought tickets, you got tickets, you used the tickets, you have to pay for the tickets.
If anyone has suffered a loss it is the train company as they could have used the funds in the running of their business. In effect they have been giving you an interest free loan.

    Thanks for the links grumbler.
Eric, I realise I bought the tickets, and used them, and that I have to pay for them - thanks. My argument is with the length of time that the company has taken to debit my cc - not the fact that I have to pay for goods/service.
  • nope sorry jolsa. you have no comeback on this.

the length of time they take to debit is their own business. they can take it whenever they want after you have had it authorised.

not what you want to hear, i know

I use my switch card to pay for my weekly season ticked on the train (each week belive it or not!) and the time it takes to appear from my account cantake from 1 day to 9 and I always buy the ticket on A Monday morning.

As others have said, once the transaction has been authorised they can take the money when ever they want

Oh well, thought as much. Thanks for your replies. The situation still might turn in my favour - spoke with the customer service manager of the rail company today, and he is looking in to why it took so long, and whether it is a fault their end or cc processing end.

When I asked about the rail company possibly meeting me halfway on the cost, he said he'll wait to see where the fault lies before making any decisions.

As it stands I expect to pay the full amount, but then if I didnt raise my complaint, there'd be no chance of getting any portion of the cost re-imbursed due to the cockup somewhere along the line...

    what cost?

the cost of the tickets? he might refund you even though you used them. think that rail manager needs to go back to business school :rotfl:

It never fails to amaze me the nerve of some people who come on here.

As has been referred to by others, you authorised the transaction, either by signature or by entering a PIN. You received services upon that authorisation. ejones999 is bang on, you've had an interest free loan, even if it is for just £70.

I take it when you next go shopping, you'll expect that to be free too. Or you could buy what you want, go through the till, then straight to customer services and order a 50% refund before you go home.

I'm all for people getting money back when a company has messed them about, through making them make numerous phone calls, or through some error that is their fault. What I'm not for is numbskulls who seem to think they can get things for free.

If you get any money back, then the person who dealt/deals with you is about as stupid as you are when it comes to common sense.

You have no idea of when you have to pay for something and he has no idea of how a business is run.

Don't give me the be nice to other MSE'ers. Blatant stupidity deserves to be pointed out and I'm not afraid to do it

All the same, you say what you think and I'll say what I think.

Last time I checked, I had that right. Just like all other users do.
