Whether the address, name, or photo is up to date is completely irrelevant to your legal right to drive which normally lasts until you are 70.

The dates on the BACK of the licence show the dates you are legally allowed to drive.

It is possible that insurers may stiplulate that you must keep these details up to date, but since they make no difference to whether you are legally allowed to drive, cancelling the policy seems an extreme sanction IMO, and worthy of a formal complaint.

Did you send a full copy of the licence showing the dates on the back?

    From the Autonet website;

    driving licence

see below on how to send to us

If you have been asked to provide a photocopy or

picture of your Driving Licence please submit the

front and back of the licence plus a copy of the

counterpart section for all drivers named on the

    policy.

    Please note:

The address on your driving licence

must match the details we have on record.

Otherwise you will have to update your address

on your driving licence with the DVLA.

I'd be arguing that what address is on my driving licence is nothing to do with my insurer and certainly not grounds for cancelling a policy.

My licence (perfectly legally) has my parents address on it, me and my car live elsewhere and obviously my insurance is held at my address rather than my parents

To change your address you must fill in the section provided on the paper counterpart. The address must be one in Great Britain where we can contact you at any time (we do not accept PO box addresses). This can also be done online at

    Ignore all this.

The DVLA is wrong, you do not have to immediately notify a new addresses, and keeping your parent's address on your licence is quite legal. You are required to have an address where you are contactable, that's all.

Golden rule on MSE forum - where the words 'rip-off' appear in thread title (see also 'con'), there isn't one at all.

Actually, from what was quoted, they're right.
The address must be one in Great Britain where we can contact you at any time.
So assuming vaio can still be contacted via his parent's address what he's done is quite legal. For someone who leads an itinerant lifestyle using the address of a friend or relative may well make more sense than trying to inform the DVLA of a change of address every few weeks and hoping they keep up. For someone who's spending time abroad and doesn't have a UK address of their own it's the only option.

That said, if he's insured a car at an address in Wisteria Avenue, Leafyton and his driving licence showed an address in Urban Blight Crescent, Crackville I imagine his insurers might well want to ask him some questions about where he actually lives and keeps the car.

yep, but there is no possible reason DVLC would need to contact me until I'm 70.

It started as a student, then moving around on contract work, then a long period of just not being bothered and now I don't want to update because I don't fancy one of the [STRIKE]ID card[/STRIKE] photo licences with the need to update the photo every 10 years.

The minor offences of failing to notify a change of name / address or to update the photo do not affect your entitlement to drive and are arguably irrelevant for an insurer.

  • The insurer doesn't want policies where the address on the policy does not match the address on the licence. This is a totally different thing to the DVLA's requirements, which are mostly about being able to send you speeding tickets.
