Daily Mail

I read an article on the Daily Mail website which shocked me, I added a reader comment, but despite it being polite and (by my usual standards) non abrasive, it was ignored, only comments which agree and support the view of the writer are displayed.

Why have this reader comment section if you don't care about reader comments?

Not all comments submitted are displayed, only a selection, and that selection reflects the balance of comments submitted, e.g if 90% of the submitted comments are in favour/support of the article, 10% against, expect 90% of the displayed comments to be in favour, 10% against
Just because your comment disagreed with the content of the article doesnt mean that was a factor for it not being displayed.

2 comments, both heavily pro the article.

Is it fair to assume that any that were not pro the article, for example my short comment, are just ignored?

All newspapers have bias and editorial...
Some you will agree with, and others that are at odds with your opinions.
Tis the way of the world @)

Why have the comments link if they only care about those why agree with them?

Last time I looked it was 13 for 0 against....bit misleading, innit.

Well, I have read the article and I am now intrigued as to your comment - why not post it on here?

I don't think this is really the place for political views.

I wasn't offensive and it was not a radical view or anything like that.

I just think it's a bit suss how they only show the views of people pro their way of thinking...

Fair enough - I don't really know enough about the situation to comment either way, but I always think balanced debate does longer lasting good as it forces people to challenge their beliefs when they have to defend them, and anyone with a genuine point to make won't be put off by those who disagree.

However, the Daily Mail doesn't have a reputation for even handedness and it doesn't entirely surprise me that they have chosen to support their position with subjectively edited comment. Free speech is all well and good until it impinges on a newspaper's objectives and then we are left to fend for ourselves. However, that is one, of many, blessings the internet has bestowed - we can always find somewhere where likeminded people are ready to discuss the pertinent issues of the day without censorship and hidden (or not so hidden!) agendas...

True enough, at least with the Guardian and the BBC News website they seem to show all reader comments, even the ones that strongly disagree...

I've written a few comments on their sports coverage before, taking issue with some typically slanted views, but they have yet to allow any of them to appear, even when there have been hardly any other responses to the articles.

It really is a shocking paper.
