Does a "producer" need to be served directly to the owner/driver?

Well the argument could be made that the car park is open to the public and therefore the RTA applies. Not sure if it will (does in places like supermarket car parks) but a narked copper might well be able to make the case initially.
Different issue as it is a Housing Association perhaps but if it was shared ownership then you'd need permission from the landowner to store your car. Otherwise, I'm sure it doesn't count.
On that basis, they could be a pain. Ignoring them, is not going to help though.
Check in with the HA that it is ok to store the van and for the love of god get rid of the thing. Your neighbours might even throw a party. What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -
It depends on whether it is SORNd or not. If it is and there are no gaps between it running out of tax then there will be no issues. But under the new continuous tax/insurance regs, if it isn't SORNd then it must be taxed/insured even if it is not kept on the road.
It's the insurance side of things that the police will be interested in.PLEASE NOTEMy advice should be used as guidance only. You should always obtain face to face professional advice before taking any action.0 -
It is sorned and is registered to me, which is presumably how they know where I live. Although the card they put through the door says "To the owner of the white van, please contact..." not "Dear Mr Tripled...", so perhaps they've carded a few other people as well, I'll ask about. As from this thread I haven't seen any good reason to contact them, I'll stick with my current approach of ignoring them until the van has gone, and contact them then to let them know.0

Did you sorn it?
Is it actually registered to you at your address?
Maybe there is fines floating around in regards to the vehicle.
Seeing as they have put a card through your door, they presume you own it. I would contact them.
+ 1 to this.PLEASE NOTEMy advice should be used as guidance only. You should always obtain face to face professional advice before taking any action.0 -

Kind of 'bury the head in the sand approach' then. Your prerogative of course.
But the police obviously have an interest for some reason and by waiting until the van has gone, will not quell that interest.
Personally I would contact them. If you are fully legal, you have no reason not to.PLEASE NOTEMy advice should be used as guidance only. You should always obtain face to face professional advice before taking any action.0 -

I think the general response has been to get in touch.
Why do you distrust the Police so much? If you have nothing to hide then call (as I said early on in the thread and Tilt has re-iterated).
You do realise that simply getting rid of the van will not make any difference to any report they have. Perhaps they have been asked to see if it has been abandoned given the length of time it has sat there rotting.
Whatever, a delay and not having the van is highly unlikely to help you or get the police on side. Quite the oppositite I'd say. What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -
Do they do producers still? taxing the car online the system knows if there is valid insurance, VED and mot, you wouldn't get a producer through the post, as per post #2 why do you ask?
HORTIs are still issued but mainly for drivers using trade insurance ir order to check exactly what use is permitted, or for when the insurance has not shown up on the PNC or MIB checks.0 -
Is parking a problem where it is or is it sitting right in front of someone's house?
It may be seen by some as a nuisance so it may have been reported as suspect abandoned, I know I would if it were dumped for so long outside my house.
Best case, talk to the police, update them. The van is legal so there is nothing they can do about it and you carry on with your intentions.
Worse case, ignore the bizzies, they then assume it is abandoned, tow it away and charge you handsomely for executive storage until you pull your finger out.
I really can't see what your problem is with talking to them unless you left your stash of dope in the back.0 -
