Yeah. They're going to turn off the gas pipes this winter if things stay as they are.

...rising commodity prices and increased Chinese labor wage costs.

My colleagues and I trade Palm Kernel Oil and Coconut Oil and its derivatives (not Generali's type of deriviatives), and we've just seen Coconut go from 28 cents per pound to 44 ccp in two weeks. That is an outrageous increase, and it's going to be filtered down into food, shampoos, detergents, pesticides eventually. The market is tight because of the biodiesel explosion in Asia, and people are desperate to fill up all the new fatty acid/fatty alcohol capacity that is coming on stream in Asia.

Nice one Melissa have a rec!
Although I think CPI is likely to drop in the next few months, I don't think it'll be by much and certainly no where to the levels the BoE think they will. I wouldn't be surprised to see CPI heading towards 3% , by the end of the year and I think IR's will climb to over 6% by the begining of 2008.
Oh and I voted 0.25% increase this month!

I will quite happily bore anyone to tears about the oleochemical industry if they want me to, but I try to avoid it on here :D

    Is Melissa a (Motley) fool?

I would have agreed with you a few weeks ago but I'm starting to get more and more uncertain where CPI is headed. Everywhere I look, prices are rising but it's just not being reflected in real figures. Surely cheap imports of Chinese clothes and plastic gumpf can't be enough to counteract the big increases in food and oil prices that we are seeing?

I still reckon no change. Only really because the pointy heads at work reckon that's what'll happen though.

I used to lurk on Fool, but haven't been on for a long time. My mother is a Motley Fool. I'm going out with a currency trader tonight, so I'll have a chat with him about where he sees the market heading.

I have to say, when I was in the States the past couple of weeks, I was *really* astounded how much prices in the supermarkets and shops like Walmart had changed since I was there a year ago.

Cheap imports from China are also countered by rising fuel costs - we're seeing big logistics costs increases at the moment. Deep sea shipping costs from Asia have shot up in my budget by around 16% (although I can't say this is indicative of the market as a whole).

I wish. Big Bank doesn't look very kindly at liquid lunches. One place I worked however used to have regular boozy breakfasts down at Smithfield Mkt.

I'm with Churchill, I try not to drink before breakfast.
