Dog and a neighbour

I understand using a crate for toilet training a dog or using it (with door open) for the dog to sleep but sorry I do not understand leaving a dog in a crate for the whole day (night too?).
Perhaps I misunderstood the OP, I hope I did.0 -

We used a crate at first for those exact reasons, then we tried to wean her out but she wasn't having any of it, my girl loves her crate, she can be very anxious and retreats to her crate by choice for comfort and to escape my two young children as they are not allowed near her space.
I have two dogs the second dog does not use a crate is happy with his bed so its their choice.
During the short period we stopped using the crate we discovered on recording our dogs is the first dog did get anxious when we were out and would take her frustration out on the other dog (despite them being good friends) , it ended up in what was almost a fight between my dogs. So we got the crate back out and she went straight in and went to sleep. So I guess we use it still for her own safety, happiness and comfort and that of my other dog. She is two me maybe as she matures we won't use it but for now it's what works for her and us.0 -
But I am not talking about using crate while the door is open, Zara loved hers too.
OP seems to be keeping the poor dog LOCKED in a crate all day.0 -
I cant believe your neighbours had the cheek to post that letter without writing who it was from!- not a very neighbourly thing to do! I dont have a dog myself so I understand how they may be getting annoyed if yours is barking all day. Perhaps the dictaphone idea is best just to see how long your dog does bark for, then look for a resolution.0

When I go out the door is shut! I too work part time four days a week and in those hours she is in her crate with the door shut. She has the biggest crate available to buy, she has a separate bed within her crate she has water and sometimes food in there (depending on time of day) she is walked for an hour before she goes in and she spends that time sleeping, I know because I have recorded her.
I do not consider my dog to be a poor dog? I consider that given that I know my dog and you don't, given that she is a rescue dog with a stressful background that she is happier and safer in her crate when unattended. If the OP is leaving the dog in a crate for 23 hours a day then I agree that's wrong but if its a few hours then we have to trust that he is doing what is best for his dog.0 -
With regards to the council, again I phoned my local council when I was having trouble and they told me, dogs are allowed to bark when people walk past the house, or knock the door, or if a cat is in the garden etc.. This is all classed as normal noise. But I was told that if a complaint was received they would send a form back to the complainant asking them to fill it out for two weeks with details of noise. If the received form was deemed to show excessive noise they would notify me and then carry out random monitoring before any further action was taken.0

I'm not a dog owner so had no idea dogs were left in cages/crates all day. Is this normal?
No wonder dogs are barking to get out?~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Any more posts you want to make on something you obviously know very little about?"
Is an actual reaction to my posts, so please don't rely on anything I say.0 -
If your neighbour has complained about your dog barking while you are out, whether you think your dog does or does not bark you have a responsibility to investigate and take steps to prevent any barking, remember, everybody has the right to peaceful enjoyment of their own home and if your dog is affecting that right then action can be taken against you.
Caged dogs get stressed, your dog is likely to be barking while you are out due to this, generally neighbours do not complain until they have had to tolerate any problem for a while. I would suggest leaving a recorder at home to check what is happening while you are out, maybe worth doing this over a few days to get a clearer idea.
If the dog is barking and you are unable to allow the dog out of the cage, I would personally suggest thinking about rehoming your dog with a friend or relative that has time to look after them so that the dog isn't stressed, dogs need quality of life and caged up for most of the day isn't the kind of life any dog longs for, or think about dedicating a part of your house for your dog that can be pet proofed and have some things to keep your pet entertained.Comping wishlist for 2017
