  • Hello and welcome.

I quite agree that it is always the small bits and pieces that eat away at a loan. Shops are designed to part us from our hard earned cash so I just keep away from them as much as I possibly can. Like you, over the years I have wasted so much, but at least I have seen the light now!

Very well done on having your light bulb moment.

Still thrifty though, after all these years:D

    Thanks Squirrel :)

I may be brave / foolish on Thursday and venture to Primarni for some light trousers / skirt as the hot weather continues and I am boiling alive at work. Obviously by actually buying summer clothing I will ruin the summer. Hmmmm tough one.

Was thinking about my in-laws today. When we were looking for a house their advice was "get the biggest mortgage you can as you'll always find the money for it somehow". We didn't - we got one we could afford to pay and that left us a bit of wriggle room in the budget. They've done well with their money, own 2 houses with no mortgage etc but Mr Delta didn't go on school trips when he was younger. He used to throw the letters about them in the bin because he knew there was no money for him to go. :(

Makes me think I don't want to be too hardcore about it. I don't want a "poverty mentality" just a sensible and sustainable one. I still want nice times with Mr Delta and Small. So cutting back where it doesn't "show". Food, work lunches, clothing, utilities, coffees out, etc.

Rambling, sorry! I think I need some sleep for making actual coherent sentences!

    Night all.

Ooh actually I did do something "proper" mfw today!

Had a call from bank to try to get me in for a "review". Prompted me to look when our fixed rate runs out and diarise to shop around before then. Bank also going to call back then with what they can offer. Feels very organised :A

Don't worry about ruining summer, I've bought garden furniture, the sun has continued to shine and I can now sit outside in the evening, catching up on everyone's diaries :)

    That's reassuring - thanks :)

Bit too low on funds for much more in the way of over payments for the rest of the month. Will "Tilly Tidy " to emergency fund and then more mortgage slaying next month.

I need to run through the utilities though and see if anything can be shaved off and diverted to mortgage. Mission for the rest of the month.

I sort of wished we had taken your parents advice, we saw a house back in 1996 for £75k and it was doable but only with pain. We decided against. For years I dreamt about it (it was a renovation project) then it came back on the market a few years ago, financially we are so better off so was very quickly on the website, that house was going to be ours but that house is now well over £400k and out of our league. Only a teeny bit gutted but hindsight is a beautiful thing. However it would have prevented us starting our family when we did and id never regret that and every couple who have lived there seemed to now be divorced.

Good luck on your MF journey

Ah that is a tough one HelenDaveKids. I was glad we had left some slack in the budget as back along there was a real run of interest rate increases and each quarter % it went up the monthly payment increased by about £15 and it wouldn't have taken many of those to make life very tight indeed. Hindsight indeed!

Have spent weekend outdoors in the sun. Beach and national trust place. Lovely. Spent some money but not much.

Had some travel expenses refunded from work so put £20 to mortgage and £2 to emergency fund.

Just used the over payment calculator on this site and even though I have only over paid £41 so far that has saved me £50 in interest :D

    Even more spurred on now!!

    hi and welcome :)
it is addictive and even the smallest amounts add up!
For us if we pay £20 per month extra it knows 2 years off and £3500 interest!
I only work part time due to the little ones but even we can manage that!!
