Gorgeous weekend here following the downpour yesterday morning.

Red - sending best wishes to you and your DH, it's good you have people who can help out with the transport.

CW - have no idea if this will work, but our elder tree had awful black fly one year, recommended to spray with a washing up liquid solution, the solution not only drowned them, but gunned up the membrane on the bodies, suffocating the flies. Not nice but effective. No idea if it works on roses for mites but could be worth a google.

Lamb slow cooking in the oven for tomorrow, was supposed to be for tonight but left it a bit late to put in, also made a date and walnut loaf to use some dates festering in the cupboard.

Now, why don't weekends last longer?

Thanks for the info. I don't really want to use chemicals in the house so a ladybird sounds good. Told him son to look for one in the garden later but not seen many around tbh. Did some gardening yesterday and didn;t see a single one.

We have beenwashing the plant with plain water every day, might try a little liquid soap in the water and spray it on.

    Thanks again

Morning CW and everyone else :D

I've had a look into these mites a bit more (sorry I thought you had the red ones!). It looks like they can be quite difficult to get rid of and insectide (I don't like chemicals either) wouldn't work anyway as it also kills the mite's predators!

It looks like hosing them off is the way to go and removing the worst of the leaves.
    I found this:
"cold water is best - direct a strong stream at the underside of the leaves. Hard enough so some of the leaves come off."

    and this:

"When hosing off the plant, make sure to rinse the entire plant, top to bottom, as well as the undersides of the leaves using a hard spray of water. Once spider mites are knocked off of the plant, they can’t crawl back. The watering should be done in the morning or early evening so that the leaves can dry before nightfall"

This also sounded an interesting treatment! :

"mix up wheat flour, water and milk, spray it on, and it turns them into little mummies."

    Good luck

    Afternoon all. lol.

Thanks Jeferey, we have been washing them off several times a day. We have been pouring water using a jug over them and my son has also been picking them off by hand. (he has very good eyesight) I can hardly see them.

there is certainly less than there were but the plant has lost a lot of its leaves. Suppose we have to keep doing this and hope we get them all. Didn;t know you should only wet them first thing in the morning or early evening though.

If all else fails might have to try the "mummy" one. lol.

    Good morning guys

After yesterdays torrential storm we have sunshine again. Yesterday afternoon and all evening we had rain, thunder, lightning and hail stones.

My son continues to pick off the mites off my lovley rose and then was every leaf. Just hope it works.

    Take care guys

Morning CW and anyone else around.

Looks as though it is going to be another really hot day here in Sussex. I got side-tracked by a couple of TV programmes last night and forgot to water the tubs so has been an early start this morning before it gets too hot.

CW keep up the good work on your rose - worth persevering to save something you love.
