Going to maldives and have a few questions

A few more points:
footwear for the beach: no need to get paranoid! I lived in the Seychelles for a year, swam/snorkelled every day, and had no problems. Yes, you should be aware that many living things can sting or worse if you step on them, and coral is sharp. But that just means you must take care and find some way to protect your feet. I often wore flippers, which were fine when swimming although walking/wading in them is difficult. I sometimes tried flip-flops, but the water kept washing them off my feet;
Health: you do need medical insurance, although that may well be included in what you are paying for the holiday. Your EHIC card is completely irrelevant. I doubt if you need any injections, but your doctor is the person to ask, not people on a web forum;
Getting to Gatwick: I also live in Devon (Exeter) and have done this journey very cheaply by train. Book on-line about six weeks before your travel date. Try splitting the journey, since Virgin offer good deals on their service between Reading and Gatwick. Also, tickets Exeter-Reading may cost more than splitting the journey at Pewsey. The best deals are for trains at fixed times, but remember that your flight home may be delayed.0 -
to think we've inspired people to book such a great holiday is a lovely feeling
We are so excited still, and counting the days (literally - only 133 days to go!!)
Jamesa007 you are so lucky to be going back so soon!!
We are thinking about our next holiday being to the cook islands or fiji...
if you are looking for snorkelling stuff try https://www.bigwednesday.com - we use them for surfing stuff and have just ordered our snorkelling gear for £15 each. (they also do underwater digital cameras although they seem a little pricey)
We cannot get this holiday out of our heads and everything pales into insignificance when waiting!!
Its a good job we planned for so far ahead though, as we have still got loads of stuff to sort out
Going to moneysupermarket now to check insurance prices.
Thank you !!!!embarrassed to say I used to work for barclays..sorry0 -
ello.
Just to add that the waterproof cameras that we found cheapest were at superdrug polaroid each for 27, 37ft depth, at £4.49. Boots had Bogof on own make ,the same for £8.99.
There is also a bogof at superdrug for the Kodak at 50ft depth at £9.99.
Can't remember Tesco price, which may have been the same or cheaper.
Hope this is of use to someone!
We're getting dead excited now- hope the weather is good.......0 -
Having read through this thread I have one more question.
We are heading out to Maldives in november, what do we need to take for evening wear. Is there any need for long/smart trousers, or is it just a total shorts and tshirt holiday.
Advice will be greatfully received.0 -
*Bump*
Just bumped, to see if i can get an answer to the above question. Anyone please.
Thanks0 -
Keep away from Male....a terrorist bomb went off on Friday injuring 12 people including two Brits. Furthet details on BBC news.0

Really depends on the resort. I went to Laguna (twice!), and you really can wear whatever you want (within reason!).
Most resorts go by the motto, 'No news, no shoes'.
Enjoy! x
Edit: Forgot to say, watch out for the mosquitoes, so maybe some linen trousers, or a good DEET spray! xGone ... or have I?0 -
I have travelled to the Maldives twice before first was pre tsunami to Reethi Rah and second to Filitheyo, On the 13th January my new husband and I will be travelling to Summer Island Village and we cannot wait, I have done loads of research so if anyone has any questions or is also travelling then please say.
Regards to tipping, I normally tip a dollar a suitcase then about $40 for the roomboy and the same again for your waiter, I usually do this at the end of the holiday as I don't like to think they have only given good service as I tipped!
Most resorts people tend to wear shorts and t-shirts in the evening, whatever you feel comfortable in really.
Scuba shoes, underwater fish guides and a star gazer book are all a must!!
As is a lilo with a clear viewing panel!! Great for lazing around watching fish you can get these at ifsogo.com.
Once you been to the maldives nowhere else will compare!!0 -
Yeah, evening wear is what you want/feel comfortable in, although the restaurants and bars do state that no beach wear is allowed ie bathing suits, bikinis etc at any time.
Have a fab time- my memories are warm and if I could afford to go out there with our children I would, but for 2 weeks £8,000 is not justifiable! Even for 1 week it's around £5,000. I shall have to rely on my memories for the foreseable future!0 -
Hi
We went to Meeru last November. I would second the 'no shoes - no news'. We wore our flippers to snorkel and a pair of flip flops when necessary around the island (which isn't very often!). We spent very little money whilst there, just a couple of trips. If you are booking trips book them as soon as you arrive as some of them fill up very quickly - especially the Robinson Crusoe
To everyone going have a great holiday!
Ps can't remember who is going to Meeru - there is a great Forum dedicated to Meeru http://www.meeru.co.uk0
