Plasterer problems-advice please

We had a couple of plasterers in yesterday to do a job.

Skim/cover existing artex in the hall/landing & stairs. I had to go to work so left my oh there on her own. These are my issues with the finished job.

1. I can see trowel marks in the ceiling. When i go to paint the ceiling will these show up easily? can these be sorted out easily?

2. My oh said they had to put 3 layers of stuff ( about 5mm) to cover up existing artex. Thats a lot of weight, will that cause any problems to existing ceiling.
3. This is the bit that grates me is the mess they left behind, splash marks on laminate floors + doors/walls upstairs, but the worst is outside where they have emptied there waste all over my front garden, just chucked it over some flowers/bark.

Do you think they left it like this because my oh was here on her own or do tradesmen normally do this. I expect some mess but this takes the biscuit.

Seems like they did a poor job. The weight wont be a problem as it will dry out. You will never hide trowel marks with paint, so lightly sand with fine paper before you paint...The obviously rushed it, as a good plasterer would have worked it till it was perfectly smooth. The mess everywhere is sloppy.

That's my 2 penneth worth anyway

if you want to be recommended by customers you leave everything tidy and to their satisfaction .
remember to thin a coat of emulsion down to seal new plaster

I have recently completed a Plastering course and there is no way they should have left trowel marks in it...that is a sign of a bad job.

We were also told that we should leave things nice and tidy as if we didnt we wouldnt get much work done. Seems they have taken the mick somewhat...

Terrible state of affairs Oysterman, they should.nt have made such a mess, have you paid them already?

BTW, the trowel marks can be sorted out, just lightly sand down the plaster, put a miscoat of matt paint on the plaster to seal it, this will show up any imperfections, including trowell marks, then you just fill with a powder filler, when dry, sand down, and dab some paint on the filler a couple of times prior to rolling your coats.

    hi there,
being a plasterer myself i do know that skimming over artex can be a nightmare, generally the artex will go soft and react with the plaster, what i do is first coat then flatten it off(smooth off with trowel) then another coat, normally that would be it but with certain artex patterns it might require another coat.

no way you should c trowel marks, when you give first coat of paint you will c what needs filling and sanding from there,

as to the weight of plaster on the ceiling i`ve never had a problem with 3 coats.

sounds like a poor clean up job for sure but generally one does have to lose the dirty water somewhere other than a drain so a garden border is fine as there is nothing in plaster that will harm yr plants but throwing it willy nilly is a no no.

sounds like they rushed to get away before a final trowel up and decent clean up

I agreed to pay when job done, wife was here so gave them cheque.

I understand the need to get rid of dirty water, but they have trod 2 plants into the earth, & covered 4 others with watery plaster. just chucked across the front garden.

Now i was'nt there because i was helping a mate out who had got behind on a decorating job & all i did was clean up & according to him the house was cleaner than when he got there. He knows that this will help in getting future work.

They will show up ! they can be sanded out, BUT why should you end up with a sore neck for these MUPPETS

If it's a max of 5mm and the artex has been scraped ( to remove high points )and BONDED properly. should be O.K.

    Get them back!

Paint that ceiling before they come back, and show THEM their workmanship tell the rejects that it ain't acceptable and you wan't that ceiling sorted BEFORE they do the next one.

Its simple Oysterman, cancel the flippen check till they come back to do the next room them you can discuss it with them, and arrange a discount off for the damage to the plants, the extra cleaning your wife did etc.
