I soak them overnight in water to which I add a paste of 1 tsp bicarb, 1 tablespoon flour and 1 tablespoon salt. This came from a Nigella Lawson book and has always worked for me. Another thing she recommends is to drain the chick peas in the morning, rinse and then fill the pan with plenty of cold water. Put the lid on and bring to boil, turn heat down to simmer but do not lift lid at all for the first hour of cooking. I'm always tempted to peek but they do seem to stay softer if I manage to keep the lid on!0

Can you cook chickpeas in the slow cooker after you have soaked them for a day? If so how long should I do them or am I just better off boiling them for a couple of hours on the hob?
Thanks0 -
Do you want to cook them in something (like in a casserole) or do you just want them to be cooked ready to use?
They can be added to a casserole after soaking and left all day - they will cook and they don't contain toxins like kidney or soya beans so they are safe.
However, if you want to use them for hummous or something where the quality of the texture counts, I would boil them on the stove. You can save time on the soaking by bringing the dried chickpeas to the boil, then turning off the heat and leaving for an hour. Then change the water and boil for the usual amount of time. this way you will get very firm, nutty chickpeas - not like the soggy tinned ones!0 -
Pulses like chick peas must be soaked and boiled for 10 minutes before being added to a slow cooker, as they do not reach high enough temperatures to destroy the toxins.
As for the cooking time you are looking at a good day they need to be well done, under normal boiling conditions its 2 hours + so I are looking at 6 + hours.
Take care to ensure they are 100% you can tell from the texture."Don't panic just chill out and smile"

I've found these lurking in the cupboard - I think I was going to make huumous one day but I don't have garlic or lemon juice. What can I do with them? Any ideas would be fantastic, thank you!July Win: Nokia 58000
