  • Very entrepreneurial! Who would have thought something like that would take off?

Yet I go to their page and their actively recruiting 2-3 more drivers so this must be something people want.

    Good luck to them!

Has anyone thought that this might be completely illegal?!

They're basically reselling goods from other outlets at an upmarket cost - dubious at best! Ok so they might simply claim they are a delivery service - who is responsible in case of any food poisoning etc? Are their vehicles refrigerated/heated etc. where is the quality control? There is a reason McDonalds etc don't do their own delivery.

Sorry to sounds like a spoil sport but all this health and safety business costs legit business a fortune.

I think the main aim with this type of service is the £4 delivery charge as opposed to a mark up with food and drink.

Most delivery drivers for any business have hot and cold thermal storage devices, so the goods can be kept at the right temperature, but when it comes to food poisoning then, you're dealing with a tricky subject and you could get yourself tied up in all sorts of litigation.

I suspect a fair amount of people who operate such a service don't have the right vehicle insurance and probably don't declare themselves as self employed. If you were totally legit and had commercial insurance and filled in tax returns then, it wouldn't really be worthwhile.

I had considered something like this myself, however if you want it all above board (and I would) it can be quite a bit of work. I am fairly certain you cannot deliver alcohol to people as you don't have a licence (and you will probably get a lot of phone calls from people wanting more drink on a weekend morning, as well as fags and a fry-up), it may be the same with cigarettes as you'd have a responsibility to ensure people are over 18, and be accountable for it. Most taxi services here no longer offer booze/fags delivery like they used to, some pubs do because they already have a licence to sell alcohol to the public.

If you are transporting food (from a cafe or takeaway etc), you should have your car registered with the Food Hygiene authorities (which is normally free), and they'll probably expect you to have a food hygiene certificate as well, keep temperature records of any hot/cold food, and cleaning records for your car.

If you were to have an accident, your insurance probably wouldn't cover you if they knew what you were doing.

That said I still think it's a good idea and if you do some proper market research you may find out that it will be worthwhile if you get enough customers. There's manys a Sunday morning I've woke up, wishing there was someone around I could pay £10 for to get me a bottle of orange juice :o
