Ooops - Sorry fingledingle, wrong quote and wrong thread!!! Definitely time for me to log off.

No problem, it must be the heat, I nearly put the cat in the fridge, I was giving her some fuss, when I noticed my husband had not put the orange juice back in the fridge. I subconsciously opened the fridge door and went to pop her in:eek::o:o

An interesting tale from The Guardian

Another case of failed direct debits and a credit allowed.

One puzzle. "I explained that I never check my bank statements because, as a disabled person on disability benefits looking after three disabled children, I don't have time."

No time to spend a few seconds checking a bank statement that arrives in the mail once a month (or check online) but time to go to a shop, queue, get money from purse or wallet to pay, go back home, put card in slot.....

Even putting coins in a slot through the month will surely take up more time than checking a bank statement monthly to see if the d/d went through.

The excuses some folk come up with. :(

    Yep, interesting article.

The disabled woman says she was never sent a bill.
    Really?
And that's not what EDF say, they say they sent her quarterly bills.
    That's bills, not statements.
Maybe she doesn't have time to read those either.

And as the journalist from The Guardian pointed out:
Evidently you have to endure many daily challenges, but this saga highlights how essential it is to keep tabs on your bank statements.

I don't think you have done anything wrong here. Your obligation is to pay, or attempt to pay, your bill. Through no fault of your own this has not materialised plus it appears the council may be acknowledging this.

It is not your obligation to ensure the council follow up the dd mandate, it is theirs and theirs alone.

I hope you get the issue resolved to your satisfaction.
    Don’t be a can’t, be a can.

Speaking personally, I don't think I've been judgemental.

I said that it was the Council's incompetence that caused your problem.
    Was that judgmental?
    I thought it was supportive.

I told you about an experience I had and got a month's payment waived.
    Was that judgemental?
    I thought it was helpful.

I advised you to start checking your bank statements.
    Was that judgemental?
I thought it was a sensible suggestion.

I advised you to check out other boards on this forum.
    Was that judgemental?
I thought it would help you organise your finances.

I agreed with another poster that your attitude to checking your statements was classic 'head in the sand' behaviour.
    Was that judgemental?
I thought it hit the nail on the head.

I don't know why you've lumped all posters on this thread i.e. everyone together and described them as 'judgemental'.

    Sadly, no.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions, but 'intent' to pay is no defence, OR mitigation when paying taxes. Proving incompetence on the part of the council may help but is not a full defence.
