My sentiments exactly! Geri's post(s) just PROVE what I said is correct. :rotfl: Epic fail Geri.
My sister is a foster carer for the local authority, so hardly a chav. She is also very forthright and will take no nonsense from anyone. Not really sure how that is an 'epic fail' but it's obvious that you aren't the brightest spark.
What time is your neighbour coming over to cook your tea?0 -
Although I am not a fan of Katie Hopkins; I really do believe that many people think the same as she thinks about children's names, and they also agree with her about the kind of family a child with a 'certain name' comes from.
Lou - I do agree with you, and that's why I said that there was the tiniest (but very tiny) amount of reason in Katie Hopkins' comments in my initial post on this thread. Here's what I posted on a thread elsewhere (about the unfortunate fates of some of the offspring of wastrels) - think it was in reply to you, actually! Small world.RuthnJasper wrote:Lou, it's very sad, but you are spot-on. I live in a housing association property and the kids in the neighbouring cul-de-sac are exactly as you describe. They quite often come over and chat and tell me their little jokes and stories, as they like to visit my dog (and before any trolls start on me, it's nothing dodgy and they never come into my house). To a one, they are all bright, sparky, intelligent, friendly and decent children and, as they get older, it's possible to actually SEE them sinking into versions of their "parents" and drifting down the same paths. It's heartbreaking. Most of the kids could easily go on to be successful in their lives and careers if they only had a better example at home and some encouragement.
I do try and tell them that, if they keep paying attention at school then they could ACTUALLY achieve anything they want to be or do. But I doubt it sinks in. These poor mites were born purely because of a lack of birth control and/or a desire for more benefits/better housing. Some are "farmed out" to granny so that SHE can try for benefits for looking after them - while the children themselves (and I include the ones that are still toddlers in this) are left to wander unsupervised at will whilst their parents slouch in front of widescreen TVs. On one occasion one of the 8-year-old boys didn't want to finish what he was doing when he was called in for the evening. The lovely "father" marched out of the house and lifted the boy bodily off the ground by his ears. Another 8 or 9 year-old used to come over for a chat when I was in the garden because, apart from his teachers at school, I was the only 'grown-up' who didn't call him a "fat failure" (he was clearly neither).
I'm only in my 30s, but already older than some of these parents. And have been drafted in more than once to look for one of the tinier tots when they haven't been seen for more than two hours (and there is a river which runs right past our houses). It defies belief.
There's an excellent book, which has been out for a while, called "It's Your Time You're Wasting" by an anonymous teacher, who has to teach children like this at secondary school. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Its-Your-Tim...ds=frank+chalk
He makes the similar point that teachers can predict what children are likely to achieve, just from their names on day 1 - James, Chris, Sarah, David, Lizzy and Claire will be top-stream and leave with good GCSEs; Shazney, Duwayne, Rio, Destiny, Jade, and Keeley will be lucky to leave with any GCSEs and no criminal record. It's sad but true.
It breaks my heart that innocent kids like Keanu Williams, Baby P and the Philpott's children didn't even have a chance to show the world how brilliant and decent they could be because they were robbed of their lives by the very people who ought to have loved and protected them more than anything else. Poor little things.
It IS wrong to judge children from their names - I stand by my points in the above post not because of the names thing; that was in the context of their upbringing and family reputation - teachers will know most of these kids because their older siblings and, probably, parents will have been taught by them as well - and reputations can stick for older children.
But what annoys me in particular about Katie Hopkins is that she is judging without knowing. She, unlike the teacher's example above, knows nothing about the children she is demeaning and scorning and, based on a single word on a card, is deciding whether that tiny child is a permissible friend for her kids, and influencing their choices in the process. Part of the importance of developing social skills is for little children to be able to choose their own friends and work out who they do and don't like for themselves - NOT having their choice of friends dictated to them by their mother.
Right, I'm getting more annoyed now.So I'm going to back slowly away from the keyboard, and do something sensible like taking the dog for a walk. At least I let her choose which dogs' bottoms she wants to sniff for herself...

Can you explain the so-called irony, please? Does defending your choice of child's name make you a chav? What is a chav anyway?0
-
Also, can anybody please explain why Ashley is such a derided name?0

Geri is not my real name, but thanks anyway!0
