Thanks everyone for all your comments, i seem to have sparked a debate!
In response to some questions aimed at me £50 a week is roughly what i will lose (or thought i would lose) so yes JSA would match up to what i am supposed to support him on now. But that wont happen hopefully as he is exceptionally bright (expected to get 10 A's or A*'s GCSE) and would always have gone on to A levels and he wants to go to University which thankfully Grandparents are going to assist with so i only have to manage till he finishes A levels.Although i am not counting my chickens hence the getting a job or job seekers allowance comment.
As for my comment being depressing welcome to the world of a seriously disabled single parent on benefits, you dont know my situation so you shouldnt judge. i didnt chose to be this way and in fact three years ago i earned 40k a year and was an active able bodied married high flier so dont judge please

It would have been nice when i did my renewal for CTC if the DWP had told me i could carry on claiming if he went on to 6th form. I recieved a letter yesterday from CB asking if he was going on and i filled out a form, so simple, why couldnt CTC do that instead of causing work for themselves e.g two renewals.

As for the info being there and not being read...its not i checked

As for him getting a job, we have discussed this and as mentioned before he is very bright and in fact his teachers expect him to sit the oxbridge entrance tests when appropriate, with this in mind i do not want him to work whilst studying, i am happy for him to work when on sixth form 6 week hols though

My niece and nephew are both very bright. One is at uni and one in sixth form. They have both worked Saturday jobs (plus as many holiday shifts as they can get) in Next since they were old enough to the day. There is more to education than studying. Work experience is invaluable too. These days, they need as many strings to their bows as possible. Sorry, but there are lots of bright uni leavers with qualifications fighting for the same jobs. My niece and nephew love being able to buy their own clothes and toiletries. They are also learning to budget and how much life costs.

I just find it sad that when you talk about what your son will get after education your first thought is what benefits he could get. If you have no ambition for him, being so bright and all, how do you expect him to have the drive himself?!

Mine all work too, but then they don't have the state supporting them, they realise that their parents need help and like yours want the Independence.

This seems to have become a get at me thread
I thought this was to get assistance
As for me being only worried about what benefits i can get my main benefits are contribution based meaning i paid my dues to get them, and yes i want what i am entitled to why shouldnt i? I am 42 and until 3 years ago had never claimed a penny except CB but unfortunately I have cancer, cancer that is untreatable so i want my kids to have the best i can give them prior to my passing, what is wrong with that. I paid NI on a salary of 30 to 45k for almost 20 years, its not like i havent paid into the system
Now if you would like to go find some other disabled single parent to pick on please do. I hope you all feel happy with yourselves. So much for just asking for some simple advice, kick someone when they are down why dont you

It wasnt my first thought I also said in employment, but i realise finding employment is heard nowadays so i mentioned both. I wont be alive when this happens and I want him to be the best that he can be and with this in mind he will aim for a job or uni but if not possible then obviously benefits, how else can he support himself? He has been taught that hard work is best, i havent been unemplyed ever since i was 16, i now have terminal cancer and cannot work, so he has always had a positive role model regarding work ethic.
People on this forum are quick to judge when they dont know the full story.
If you feel I am wrong for claiming what i am entitled to after paying NI for 23 years then go ahead carry on making mean comments.
I personally always thought that was what the benefits system was for? To help people when they are at their lowest especially after they have paid in to the system all there lives

The state supports me as i have terminal cancer, I have worked my whole life since i was 16 and always paid my NI etc
I didnt expect to have to justify my whole excistance but here goes I also have a 4 year old daughter, i am terminally ill, my son being 16 helps around the house, cooks, cleans and generally cares for me and his sister when i am too ill to do so. My partner abandoned us 3 years ago when i was diagnosed and my parents live 30 miles away and are disabled themselves so we manage as best we can
Hope you feel happy with your judgemental comments now!

My youngest daughter is also 16 and I also got a letter stating the tax credits will stop at the end of august. I rang them and the advised me to contact them as soon as I know what course she will be attending in september. So as this is dependent on what GCSE results she gets which dont come out until 22nd august I guess I will have to do my best to ring them between 22nd and 31st august so that the tax credits won't stop.

Similarly I also have an elder daughter who is 18. Her course finished 2 weeks ago and the tax credits for her stopped the day her course ended. However, she can't sign on until 4th September. I will try to feed her on fresh air until then! And before anyone judges - yes she is looking for paid work.

I have made provision for her. The only problem is I was under the impression that I would get child benefit and child tax credit for her till the end of August (as advised by people on here a few weeks ago). Its stopped 10 weeks before I thought/was advised it would and she can't sign on from now.
