    As depressing as your statement is, if he is that expensive to 'keep' do you really think £50 a week will be sufficient? That's all he'll get on JSA.

    It's another example of mistakes made by government. "Benefits people" - generally DWP (previously DSS) - were fully aware of this sort of thing.

    The problem arose when the payment of "benefits" was handed over to the non benefit paying entity otherwise known as the Tax department; a department more geared up to collecting funds rather than the complications involved in paying them out.

    DSS/DWP used to ask if a child was continuing in education and continue paying. That worked well enough.

    I wouldnt consider it a mistake that TC and CB need to know if a child is remaining in Full Time Education. As Houseunderwater stated, it is mentioned on Award Notices that this needs to be updated if you wish to continue receiving TC for your child.

    Maybe the benefits ppl just havent caught up to the new rules so thanks i will be in touch with them and se what they say

    Remember that they are in charge of benefits for the whole of the UK, and this change only impacts on those who live in England.

    Dare I suggest that at 16 he is old enough to get a part-time job and start contributing some of his own money to his food/clothing bills.

    Just going through this with our son.He's just left school and going to college, you need to inform CTC and CB as they don't tell each other as i thought they might lol

    Where did I say that was a mistake? The mistake I referred to was giving the responsibility for paying out to a department whose experience was in collecting.

    The problem with things like this is it relies on A) people reading it and 2) ;) people remembering that they need to do something about it some months or years down the line.

    Human nature being what it is, it turns out that's not a very efficient way of doing things, hence situations like the one described. That was previously appreciated by those administering the system, hence the enquiries going out at the time of the potential change.

    I believe driving licence renewal reminders are sent out and the TV licencing people do the same.

    Everyone knows when their licences expire so there should be no need of reminders but they are still issued because it's known what happens if they're not.

    It's the same reasoning.

    Sorry...did you mean to quote someone else? I can't see what relevance that has to my point about which department was the best one to administer benefits.

    I have the same thing DS had just turned 16 and will be going to College in September, I did mention it when i got my renewal but was told to inform within 4 weeks of this time incase of any further changes ? so I will do that

    they DO tell each other, I called a couple of weeks ago to stop my CB and they told me no need to call TC as it was done at same time. And sure enough new reward notice for both CB and CTC has come thru. I only called the CB number
