Hasn't it always been the case that when a new cheaper deal is announced older customers stay on the legacy product until they ask to move?

Often when a new deal/package is announced it may appear to be an improvement, but at a closes look the older package may have been better suited to that individual.
At the moment im on a legacy three sim only deal - 200 minutes, 500Texts, 2GB of data and most importantly that 2GB of data includes tethering all for £15 per month
I dont tether very often, but its something that i have grown accustomed to, and in some cases i rely on it.
So up until now the old package i was on was better value than the newer packages.

The much maligned (granted by a few on here who haven't been customers) Utility Warehouse recently automatically reduced my phone line rental/broadband by almost £3 because they had reduced it for new customers so no, not every company does this. Same with their SIM only deals which have been reduced and old customers have also automatically benefited (my wife being one of them). Having said that, they have now angered me somewhat by granting free lifetime membership to any new customer who signs up this month even though I have been paying £18/yr for years (and will continue to pay unless I move away) so maybe they are also joining the rest now.

PS certainly in the case of these new Three deals, the 30 day rolling SIM One Plan is exactly the same as the 'old' one but £7/mth cheaper, while the £15/mth 12 month One Plan is significantly better (all you can eat data as opposed to 2gb on the old one) whilst also being £5/mth cheaper.

Why are you surprised they haven't lowered the price for everyone who hasn't asked? Three would lose a fortune giving Joe Blogs a £7/£10 monthly discount when he's none the wiser.

Furthermore, why should loyalty be rewarded? I don't want to stick with one provider through thick and thin when my opinion of who offers the best product varies frequently, I want to be able to snap my finger and have what is the best deal on that day. These companies aren't always willing to offer what their rivals are so they should lose my custom, it's a competitive industry. I just switched from T-mobile after being with them for 2 years because the best retention offer they made me was £21 unlimited data + tethering but at limited speed. The tethering is crucial to me and a nice addition, but I've switched because Three are a faster network and cheaper.
  • I give up lol. Seems like we get the sort of suppliers some of us deserve.

It is unfortunately the market we do business in... You could spin this the other way and say if they reduced the price automatically what happens if the price doubles?

What about people who get cashback on these deals? Does a price reduction impact cashback? There are definately reasons you can argue that staying on the previous price may in some cases be better.

Do charges for exceeding the allowances or sending MMS increase on the new versions of the plans? I'm not saying they do I am just providing potential reasons this sort of decision might not be so clear cut.

Not as far as I can see, indeed the 12 month SIM at £15 per month has unlimited data compared to the old £20 per month one at 2 GB per month. The 30 day SIM at £18 per month looks identical to the old package, except it's now £7 per month less.

When I spoke with Customer Services to take advantage of the price reduction, the guy suggested it was a limited time offer. I have no way of knowing if that really is the case, he was trying to hook me into taking the 12 month package instead of the 30 day one, so it could have been a sales pitch... Only time will tell.
