My son is at infant school and it cost us £25 just for 2 school jumpers and a new p.e t. shirt and my husband lost the money on the way there doh! I agree its a rip off tho, the only place we can buy uniform from (jumpers and p.e t shirt) is a little hut like shop where we live and her customer service is pretty poor, tells you it will be ready in a week so you go back a week and a half later and she just says not ready yet and when you do pick it up its not the size you asked for. So could be worse

I don't think the OP would have a leg to stand on regardless of the price.
Maybe she's reached the point in her GDL where she's realised that.0 -
My school blazers cost £108 and that was in the mid - late 90s!
I think skirts and cardis were about £27 too !0 -
My grandson's uniform when he started secondary school cost just under £500!
My daughter is a single parent and was on benefits so guess who paid? The school's attitude is "if you want to send your son to this school and he's lucky enough to get a place, then you have to pay for the full uniform!" Unfortunately she had no choice of school!
The secondary school where two of my granddaughters go has an official uniform supplier. This shop has the monopoly on supplying uniform to 95% of the schools in the area - state & private, which I thought was against the monopoly rules. The girls have to wear special skirts, logo'd jumpers, PE shirts, socks & shorts and blazers & ties. They are supposed to have tracksuits and PE bags, craft aprons and science overalls with the school logo on, but most don't bother and after initial mumps & grumps by the school they seem to have given up on insisting on these 'extras'.
Am I being too cynical if I think (know
) that the schools are getting a cut from the retailers in exchange for exclusive rights for supplying uniforms.
Granddaughters' school tried to get the pupils to wear clip-on ties, but they were in the same design as the proper ties which were not supplied any more. The more creative pupils just got 2 clip-on ties and cannibalised them to make a proper tie, some even selling them to fellow pupils! The school soon gave up on that idea and changed the tie design pattern altogether - but they are now supplied as a normal tie!0 -
Sorry, haven't read all the threads - did anyone else go to a primary school without a school uniform? Maybe that was unusual (in the 70s/early 80s). Then at secondary school there was a uniform (no blazer and tie) but nothing logo'ed, nothing bought from school. My parents don't know how lucky they were!

I never had a uniform until high school when I was 13 which was late 80's .. 87/88 iirc I had a year of white shirt with tie, navy skirt/jumper and that was all. in the second year we merged with another school and uniform was.. white shirt, navy jumper, grey skirt (the boys were allowed trousers
) and a different tie. At some point between my leaving and my brother starting 14 years later they changed the uniform to polo shirt/fleece etc and all other expensive stuff. I haven't read all of the thread so apologies for that - but am I reading this right, the OP wants to take legal action against the school because she begrudges paying out for her own kids school uniforms???
Seriously? OP what kind of greedy grasping person ARE you??The opposite of what you know...is also true0 -
I prefer school uniform! I'm glad they have to wear it. It's so easy to wash and dry, and no nagging for branded clothes because 'everyone else has it'.52% tight0

I think schools should return to black/grey/navy trousers/skirts with a plain blouse/shirt and school tie. In Winter add a sweatshirt in with badge. Smart and practical and affordable if you can go to High Street for the basics of bottoms and shirts/blouses.
My secondary school actually started out in late 60s with a "posh" uniform as it was first RC senior school. Blazers, berets and scarves were required. By the 70s they had removed the need for these items as parents complained they couldn't afford them and stuck with the basics. We were the only school locally that strictly enforced uniform and people always commented how smart we looked! I longed to get away with my tie undone and to wear trousers!!!
Harsh?? The OP thought the uniform cost was high compared to Supermarket prices.I haven't read all of the thread so apologies for that - but am I reading this right, the OP wants to take legal action against the school because she begrudges paying out for her own kids school uniforms???

We didn't have a uniform (late 60s/early 70s) so it was quite a shock when I went to secondary school. We had to change into indoor sandals when we got there, summer dresses had to be made you just bought a length of material and as well as a daft felt hat and gabardine mac we had to wear maroon knickers :rotfl:14 Projects in 2014 - in memory of Soulie - 2/140
