I don't have kids so don't know if the prices quoted are expensive or not.

I do, however, remember my Mum & Dad struggling to afford my school uniform for Grammar School as that had to be bought from the approved supplier.

I have just started a GDL hence my straight thinking of taking legal action which I know will be appreciated by any affected parents.

You seriously believe that considering legal action against your childrens' school on this issue is straight thinking?

I hope, as you progress through your Law Diploma course, you develop a bit more common sense than you appear to possess now.

    1. My kids have never changed into normal clothing after school and I don't know any of their friends who do.
My children have always changed once they were home in order that the uniform can be washed (so I don't need as many multiples) or that it might last a bit longer if it is not subject to the wear and tear playing causes.
If I had paid £100+ on a special outfit I would ask the children to change when it is not necessary to wear the outfit in order that it is preserved.

    2. It's not so much about tatty clothes but about avoiding the pressure of designer clothes.
My children and most of their friends are not name-obsessed and never have been. In fact they prefer to boast how little they can spend at Primarni to get a few outfits.
    3. Everything is available when you make it a priority.
I think it is already proven that parents pay for the uniforms no matter the cost but the point is that surely astronomical uniform costs are not necessary?
I wouldn't want to spend £100 on an outfit, but if that's what I had to do for my kids to attend the school of my choice, then I would accept it, along with the cost of trips and all those things I would rather not spend my money on.
We all have to accept the cost and that is probably the issue - we HAVE to accept the cost. A school can dictate where you can buy the uniform from and although they are supposed to take the cost into account when deciding on suppliers, like any other government department, their notion of affordable is not the same as an everyday persons idea of affordability.
  • makes me glad the only bit you had to buy from the school for me was a tie! £3 i think it was, and the rest was white shirt, grey jumper and grey skirt, although we did get trousers brought in (woo go petitions!!)

and mum always had us change out of our uniform when we got home,

I've noticed there are loads of kids these days who stay in their uniform after school. Mine have always had to change and hang it up the minute they are in the door.

Much to their annoyance. :D Especially when some pal used to call the minute they got in, and pal was still in uniform.

    Such a hard life. :rotfl:

I will be buying tomorrow from the school.

    1 x Polo shirt
    1 x sweatshirt
    1 x pe shirt

    This comes to £31

The trousers, joggers and pe shorts all have to be black with no logo's which I shall pick up from town.

Not too bad I thought x

Hi op, I feel your pain!!!
My sons secondary school turned into an academy with no grace from running the old uniform, they did however supply the blazer and a t shirt, not that it made that much difference as the rest if the uniform still cost over £100.
I did complain to the head for 2 reasons,
    1) if a large company (ie tesco) updated their logo it would be rolled out over time, they wouldn't just suddenly close and expect staff and all shops to have new uniform and new stationary ready for the next morning, it would be rolled out gradually.
And 2) I was more than peeved as he still had plenty of wear in his existing uniform. I begrudged buying an extra 2 polo tops, 2 jumpers and another new pe track suit, football socks and other bits they deemed necessary when his original uniform fitted.
Given the choice I would've replaced gradually as either the older uniform became too small or tatty. But hey-ho no choice was given.

So yes I certainly understand your frustration at the situation but unfortunately I think there is not much you can do other than purchase the new uniform.
Still I would write to the head and express your concerns and let him/her know you are unhappy about the new uniform being rolled in with immediate effect come September.

My dd's primary have just changed their colour polo top.
The allowed all the children to vote in the colour that they were happy with, the colour with the most votes won, the head is running the existing colour and new colour til December then as of January only the new colour will be allowed. I have bought her the new tops now as she will be in year 6 in sept and leaving come this time next year.

    Hi All,

I am not sure this is the right forum but I would like to ask for advice on this if its worth taking up or not.

My kid's school recently turned to an Academy and they are charging extortionate prices for the new uniform which is compulsory come September.

If the prerogatives of the school/council/government is for the kids to be educated, why make it compulsory for pupils to buy uniforms only from the school at prices that is not fair to anyone but the school.

I need advice please or suggestions if there is any existing thread/action along this line.

    Thanks in advance.

    Sweatshirt £6.95
    Polo shirt with Badge £5.95
    Tie £3.50
    School Fleece £15.45
    PE T-Shirt £3.95
    Book Bag £4.56
    PE Bag £3.90

    Total £44.26

I appreciate this is nothing compare to what some other schools are charging or that some people might consider this whining unnecessarily but I am sure a few other people feels the same way.
The same set of uniform cost far less if bought from else where and considering how fast kids grow, one might end up spending a fortune on a yearly basis if you have a medium school age family.

When I was at school our full school uniform came to over £150; don't think £44 is too much for something your child will wear most days. A good fleece can easily be £15 without any badges or anything, for example.

If you don't like the prices, find another school.

I'm just glad uniform (usually) no longer includes berets.

I had a stupid black thing with a yellow badge and elastic under my chin. I did all my best scowling wearing that thing. :rotfl:
