I work for a tiny bank, and even a tiny bank like us doesn't put the payees name on the statement.

For us an average days clearing is between 2500 to 3500 cheques. Even for that amount of cheques it'd take for ever to manually enter names on to the system .... I can't imagine any bank would have the manpower to do this.

Our bank shows the name of who we sent the cheque to on the statement and in online banking, but not the app.

Are you sure you're not getting confused with debit card payments?

Cheques are sorted by machines which just read the sort code and account no. Your bank could only show the name of the person you'd paid if the cheque was sorted and input manually, and providing that they could read your handwriting. This would be extremely expensive to implement, so it's never going to happen.

Harrods Bank forwards paid cheques to its account holders as a matter of routine free of charge

  • I think it's only the high-end, speciality/private banks that do this. For the reasons stated above it's got to be a manual process, so it's expensive.

Coutts Private Bank do it and presumably their competitors, but not the sort of stack 'em high and sell 'em cheap banks that the likes of you and I use.

Well, they have to justify their extortionate fees somehow. They are the only UK bank I can think of that has transaction charges on personal accounts. And they are very much stuck in the past.

EDIT: And they charge £25 for a replacement debit card! Anyone who's with them is a moron. No ifs, no buts.

Isn't it free banking if a balance of £5,000 is maintained ? (apart from card replacements)

(Nationwide charge for card replcements )

    Not a chance of this.

Earlier this year my OH accidently (well she reckons so!!) used my NW chequebook rather than hers. The cheque cleared fine (much to my surprise when I looked at a strange transaction on my account).
