how?
if they were only putting the car onto the ramp & it failed how is it there fault. did they start the mot i think you maybe able to go onto the mot history checker with details from your logbook & it may show a test aborted, if thats the case you could query the garage, as they may be lying.0 -
As an ex-workshop foreman, I can tell you that every decent, reputable garage business should have insurance to cover such eventualities. Armed with this knowledge, ask them very politely to make a contribution. Perhaps waive at least some of the labour costs?
Although I have to say that, if this had happened at my old workplace, I would have checked the Service Replacement Interval and attempted to refuse any contribution, making an eventual decision based upon the customer and their effect upon trade. (Talk in the Pub/restaurant/shops, etc, amount of business done.)
Why should the garage pay any of the bill? They didn't damage the car, they just drove it as you would expect anybody to do - could have easily been op driving it or someone else driving it when it finally went. The garage don't seem to have been at all negligent0 -
I would hope for a serious amount of goodwill from the garage. As much as it's "not their fault" you put a working car in for a routine inspection and it is now 1.5 tonnes of scrap, unless fixed.
I'd hope to only be paying parts, and they sort the labour at an absolute minimum.0 -

What difference would that make?0 -

Hold on... If you was driving a friends car with 180k miles on the click and the flywheel decided to give way, would you pay for it to be repaired?
It would seem this was inevitable and the garage was merely unfortunate enough to be the ones with the car as the time the car went bang.
The garage have done nothing wrong, nothing at all. So why they should be at a loss as a result is beyond me!
At least op seems to be level headed enough to see it rationally, despite posts like this0 -
Or if a person rolled a ball in to the road and you run over it, would you expect to be liable for the ball - after all when they rolled it in to the road it was perfectly and now its not.
It would seem ops problem was as unavoidable by the garage as the driver who run over the ball in the above example0 -

Yeah... Right........
You have a car that's done 50'000 miles, no problem, the garage drive it less than a few feet and the belt snaps prematurely?
I'm sorry but this stinks of BS.
Somebody has done something stupid and they're trying to worm their way out of it.
Maybe they forgot to put oil back in and it seized?
We seem to be assuming that garages are all sweetness and light.
If it we're me, i'd get that engine and send it to an engine builder to see what really happened and i'd want to see this snapped cambelt.
Even if they'd driven it around town first, the chances are still less than 1'000'000 to 1.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Sounds an enormous coincidence ? The belt snapped on the ramp.
More likely some fool messing about has caught something in the pulley like a rag or as said, started the engine with no oil in it, then tried to cover it up.
First job is to get the car out of that garage and to someone who can investigate this utterly bizarre coincidence.Be happy...;)0 -
You have to have it investigated independently, but bear in mind, weird things do happen with cars and no garage has, or should, have insurance to repair cars broken in their hands through no fault of their own.0
