Just received the following from my friend in Luxor:
Game over and out : the army took control of the country - all Egypt is euphoric ! Fireworks everywhere, all islamic tv-channels immediately closed : the islamic experiment is over.
The police is back in the streets and the state of anarchy is finally something of the past.
I"ll keep you informed about the evolution of the situation.

But you remind me of a serious point, I wonder where will be a relatively 'safe bet' for next summer?
Somewhere not too expensive, not long haul flight, hot, the cashpoints work/have money in them, reasonable crime risk and not in catastrophic economic meltdown?
I'm struggling!
Portugal is shaping up nicely to become the latest Southern European country to prepare to dance to the tune of Frau Merkel and her Troika stormtroopers.
Personally I've just returned from my annual pilgrimage to the Greek islands - they're wonderful and open for business in a big way.
Even in the best of times I'd avoid Egypt.
The men are just not very nice people who treat their womenwfolk worse than they treat their animals.
More than 90 women have been attacked and raped by gangs of maurading savages during the latest round of demonstrations in Tahrir Square.0 -
Very nasty indeed at the moment.
Egyptian tourism is in the pan and you'd have to be a very brave person to ignore FCO advice - and I'd even think twice should they change it.

To anyone thinking of clicking the above link be warned of two things.
First of all it the Daily Mail.
Second of all there is an image of a guy laying dead on the floor with brains spilling out of his head.
The very fact a newspaper has to show such an image shows how amateur the journalists are that they cannot convey through words a situation - But take the easy option of adding an image for impact.0 -
A friend of mine, who is a member of the cabin crew of a major airline was in Cairo last Sunday night. They were "confined" to the hotel on advice from their employer.
Though another had the same in Abidjan (Ivory Coast)!0 -

Violent death is ugly I'm afraid.
And I wouldn't be too sniffy about the Daily Mail. It has great journalists and a wide readership.
I don't see any other tabloid nespapers in the UK with such extensive coverage of the deterioating situation in Egypt.
Lazy and predticable call on your part.0 -

Indeed.
Anyone who thinks the Muslim Brotherhood will calmly accept a military coup throwing out their democratically-elected government is in for a shock.
Be prepared for a very long period of violence.

We went to Egypt in April/May. We were in Aswan, Luxor and Cairo (inc. Tahrir Square). Things were fine then, but in a little over a month, the situation has obviously changed dramatically. I'd not likely go now; too much uncertainty with the inevitable power vacuum that will open up.
We met some lovely Egyptian people whilst there, all of whom (cautiously) told us that they wanted Morsi and the Muslim brotherhood gone. So for them, I'm really glad. I just hopw that whoever comes next is an improvement for the people of the country and that stability can arrive soon, before tourism is frightened away for years to come.Remember Occam's Razor - the simplest explanation is usually the right one.

Radical Islam needs to be wiped from the face of the planet, forever. Quite how this will ever be done, God only knows. But violence and bloodshed in Egypt seems sadly inevitable.Remember Occam's Razor - the simplest explanation is usually the right one.
