I don't like laminate myself, it invariably wears on the joins when not fitted professionally.I really wouldn't fit it on the stairs.Just because some owners haven't slipped on theirs in a couple of years use doesn't mean its not going to happen.

I had my stairs clad in solid oak and they were fine. They weren't varnished though. They were so easy to clean and we didn't have problems with the children or us slipping in 6 years. We wore socks indoors most of the time because we had a slate floor downstairs which was chilly on the feet.

Years ago people would have a carpet strip up the middle of wooden stairs, with carpet rods to keep it in place. That's easy to do - it must be cheaper/easier than buying a whole carpet and having it fitted. I've noticed they seem to be coming back too.

or there's this: http://homestars.com/uploaded_images/0021/8435/Stair_Carpet_bottom_medium.jpg with just carpet on the top parts.

Hi, we considered it in this house for a few seconds for ease of cleaning really as it is a town house so lots of traffic on first set of stairs but decided against it. We had proper wood stairs in our old house and although very easy to keep clean that was the only up side to them! They were noisy and slippy and i didn't much like them tbh! I fell down ours here (carpeted) one day and it hurt, i can imagine on wood it would do a lot more damage.

Karndean can be used OK for stairs. Their website says:-

Can Karndean be used on stairs?
Yes it can. The front edge of each step will need to be finished off with compatible stair nosings. But your supplier will be able to give you all the information and advice you need.

If Karndean can be used I would also think Amtico can too but I haven't found anything on their website.

Karndean recommend asking a supplier but a fitter/layer might be even better. It's worth chatting to someone who does it for a living...

We looked at a house with laminated stairs. The only word I could think for it was 'dangerous'
It was so slippery. Imagine going down the stairs in socks. You'll get there quicker than you had intended!

I never thought about that. Maybe Karndean or Amtico do flooring fit for purpose. There might be a non-slip variety. It would still be wise to ask a qualified fitter because they'll have come across this many times.

What if someone leaves a tap on and water runs down the stairs, if it's wet it will definitely be slippery... unless you are planning of creating a bumpy aqua slide ;p

What if someone were to create a new user account, post a single off the wall comment on a thread they resurrected from 12+ months ago (it was actually originally created back in 2007), log off and see how many people respond to the old posts not realising what had happened?

That would be a jolly good wheeze wouldn't it?
