Can I laminate the stairs?

My nana has wooden stairs, the type that have the open area at the back of each step (we used to think it was funny to sit on them and kick our feet at folk walking underneath until we got red hot bums for our troubles!).
As I have gotten older I have realised how noisy it is as now my niece and nephew run up and down them like we used to and the noise echoes throughout the whole house (and it's a big house) and right into the bedroom where I sleep when there.
Due to this I wouldn't have anything other than carpet on the stairs now and OH complains that he nearly breaks his neck on it when he has on hisbackless slippers!"Life may not always be the party you wish for, but whilst here you may aswell dance"!!!

We have a varnished wood stairs, and like others have said, it's noisy and slippy in socks or wet feet. I've come down on my a$$ more than once, and the kids make a game of sledding down in sleeping bags when they can get away with it:eek: .
I'm just about to change it to carpet, fwiw.I'm an adult and I can eat whatever I want whenever I want and I wish someone would take this power from me.

I wanted to have real wood flooring in my upstairs and downstairs hallway, but didnt know what to do with my stairs because, as most people have said, it would be quite dangerous, but didnt want to carpet it as I thought that would look a little strange, going from wood to carpet to wood. So, Ive eventually decided to have a carpet runner down the middle of the stairs, which ties the wood floor in nicely to the sides of the treads and risers, but doesnt pose the obvious safety hazard of fully wooden stairs.
I must say though, that this method does seem quite expensive. The runners are generally specially made to be such, and then you have to buy the retaining bars to hold the runner in place. Thats before the usual underlay and carpet gripper are bought. It does make for a nice feature though, from the pictures Ive seen and would probably solve the noise problem as well.0 -
Answer to your question is yes, Quick-Step do a profile for this application, here is a link to it http://www.ukflooringdirect.co.uk/Quick_Step/Quick-Step_Accessories/Quick-Step_Accessories_Stair_Profile.html
It is flush fitting so no trip factor, quick-step is one of the best floors on the market0 -
Mmm! reminds me of a house we rented before our new house was built and finished. Me yelling at the boys to be careful, then I slip!! down the wooden stairs!!! 4 hours in casualty, a broken toe and 6 weeks off work with whole leg in plaster! I joke you not! Needless to say we moved into our new home with my leg in plaster. I wouldnt recommend it and i was careful!!!0

Pergo also manufacture products to go on stairs, they invented the flush fit stair nose, and is the hardest wearing laminate on the market (bar none) so will be excellent for the stairs.

You can fit laminate on stairs but need to fit an "edge"
Please see have a look at floors4home.co.uk and click on Stair Safety Nosings or look at morleysltd.co.uk for an example.0 -
I don't know if this will make sense without a photo but my brother had laminate on the facing edge of his stairs and carpet on the bit you stand on. It sounds daft but it looked really nice.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

What if someone leaves a tap on and water runs down the stairs, if it's wet it will definitely be slippery... unless you are planning of creating a bumpy aqua slide ;p0

I'm thinking of having Karndean flooring on the stairs. Karndean say it isn't a problem as long as you have suitable nosings.
Has anyone else got Karndean on their stairs?0
