Hi,
Anyone got any opinions on the following places as we are looking to relocate. Need to be south of Leeds due to my job but near enough to Leeds for my other half to get to work. Public transport to Leeds quite important.
Good schools are another vital point.
The 3 areas we seem to like are...
Morley
Gildersome
Tingley
Other areas we looked at and ruled out were Osset, Birstall, Gomersal, mainly due to transport reasons.
Any opinions (pro and con) on the 3 mentioned areas, or any other suggestions please.

Morley would be my top choice it has it's own train station (two trains an hour during the day to Leeds) and buses from the centre constantly to all over West Yorkshire. Morley is a town so there are local shops, two supermarkets and several pubs. Morley High has just been awarded outstanding by ofstead. Even if you live in Gildersome/Tingley the high schools are in Morley.
Gildersome and Tingley have bus services but not as regular. Gildersome also tends to get a bit cut off in bad weather as the buses tend to avoid it in the snow which will be an issue if you rely on public transport for work.
Anything else you want to know let me know.0 -
I agree, Morley has more amenities and the transport links are good. There are several places that look run down (as i guess there is in most localities) but there is a new leisure centre and plenty of parkland around. There is an out of town shopping centre close, each of the large supermarket chains are fairly nearby and if you like bargain hunting Morley centre has a market and busy high street, and lots of free parking!Bossymoo

We live in Batley and i would'nt really reccomend living here, theres some pretty rough areas (thankfully we are very close to birstall so living in a nicer area) but Birstall is nice and close the the motorway and Batley train station too (there is a direct link from batley to leeds). It is quite small though and you would probably find yourself traveling into Batley anyway. My DH also works in leeds (city centre) and used to go by train and it took him about 30mins for one way journey from Batley to Leeds.
I've heard really good things about Morley too, my driving instructor lives there and she cannot rate it high enough. I dont really know much about Morley though but we do travel through it and it always seems to look nice.
Good luck where ever you decide though :beer:Started 01/01/13 Swagbucks 2013 £30/£150

Ossett is ok and is on the outskirts of Wakefield and close to Dewsbury so you'd have a choice of train stations. Horbury is the next small town and IMO is nicer. Morley is also nice.0

Depends one what you want. The Huddersfield Line train to Leeds through Morley is one of the most overcrowded in the country - by the time you get into Morley it's pretty much always full during the commute periods.
Morley Academy is an improving school, though heavily oversubscribed and increasingly so (as are most of the decent secondaries in Leeds). Westerton Primary in Tingley has an outstanding rating I think, but it's also one of the biggest primaries in Leeds with more than 600 pupils - depends how you feel about size.
Look at Beeston - as easy as the areas you mention for the motorway and a short bus ride into Leeds. If you're heading away from Leeds in the morning traffic is pretty good, as you're going against the main flow. £6 taxi from the city centre after a night out, plenty of two and three bed properties available to buy or rent. Schools mostly good and improving and mainly feed Cockburn College of Arts, which has the second best value added score of any secondary in Leeds. There's a great park, and easy to get to plenty of other facilities. The nicer bits tend to be between Old Lane and Cross Flatts Grove, particularly around the Grovehalls and Oakhursts just off Old Lane.0 -
Kind of ruled out Ossett due to distance from Leeds. Tingley is close enough to Morley To use the facilities. We know of good primaries in both. Secobdary have been told that Woodkirk has the best rep. Our son is only 2 so long time until secondary school but would Morley residents likely be too far to get into Woodkirk? Thanks for comments so far. Never easy moving half way across the country into the unknown.0

I say Morley as lived north Wakefield and worked in Morley. Great mix of shops, good transport links to Leeds. Plus there's a lot of houses (terraced and semi) 3 beds for under £125k.0

Looking at 4 bed (detached ideally) so not limited to places at the bottom budget level.
My main worries about Morley were that some people told me it was a bit run down and the other was regarding secondary schools but as I said, that is 9 years away so not a vital aspect as long as the primaries are good and I know that is the case.0 -

You'll need at least £225k for a 4 bed detached as the market seems to have really picked up and things are selling fairly quickly.
Morley is full of commuters and their families and I wouldn't class it as run down. There are "better" areas in North Leeds which look more run down.
Just a note it has been proposed there will be 8000 new homes built in Morley. To be honest I'm unsure where they will fit them or if Tingley and Gildersome will just merge even further.

Realistically, unless you have compelling reasons you're going to struggle to get your child into a primary which you're not in the catchment for. Leeds doesn't quite have the rigid catchments of many places, but primary schools are so oversubscribed across the City (a problem which is growing) it's going to be ever more significant.0
