I was just wondering what was the normal.

My CM has just asked me if I can give my child(10m) breakfast before he comes to her because she takes him out to a play center more or less straight away and she is short on time.

I wondered have I been in the wrong sending child without breakfast to her as it was never discussed before hand whether he would have I just assumed he would as his normal breakfast routine is 9am, but I was under the impression the other children arrived more or less the same time so she must not be giving them breakfast either.

Although it means I am going to have to be getting up at 6am, to get ready myself which I don't mind doing - it does mean I would have to get my child up at 6:30 to give him his bottle, then feed him around 6:50..so I have then time to feed him and get him dressed/changed to leave at 7:15 as I have to take OH to work for 7:30 then back to CM to drop him off.

Thoughts?

That sounds like the CM is being lazy and not wanting to feed him to me.. why would you take children to a play centre at 8am?? Surely there are school/nursery drop offs at 9 and the play centres don't even open until 9-10am here so I can't see it being that different elsewhere.. plus children being dropped off with her later than 8am.

I'd just say no.. getting him up that much earlier seems really mean.

If he has milk when he gets up I can't see it being that wrong to take him without having had breakfast.. I'm sure if he was hungry you'd know about it pretty sharpish!

I have several friends who were CM's and they had children dropped off gradually between 7:30-8:30 and had breakfast to do for some and not for others.. all were offered it though. They did school runs then went about their day with the pre-schoolers from there.

Childminders should be more flexible than nursery and I would say you can ask that she gives breakfast. Maybe you could say that you would rather she gave him breakfast and he spent less time in the play center. Explain what the situation is at your end so she understands, she probably assumes you leave your house to come straight to her so that giving breakfast would be easy for you.

When I used a childminder I gave my son breakfast as I had plenty of time (he always woke at 6am) and I left my house to go straight to the minders. When I dropped him off there were other children there having breakfast.

My kids both started nursery at around 10 months old and had breakfast at home before we went, though granted I didn't have to drop OH else or do anything else before dropping kids at nursery at 8. But then our routine always had breakfast before 9 anyway so it wasn't realy an issue.
What I find hard to understand is that you hadn't sorted this BEFORE you started him there. Surely when you discuss the terms of her looking after him you sort out what meals she will provide

This is true but the fact it wasn't discussed is the fault of the childminder not the OP

Now I am confused because the place she takes him doesn't open till 10, I assumed it was 9 and she walked thier after the school run...

We discussed about her doing home made meals etc but it just never occured to me she wouldn't do breakfast, I think we may of even discussed what he likes to eat (including breakfast things)

To be honest I think she was perfectly happy to give him breakfast to start with but I think she has decided to take him to this play center..which I *assumed* (see above) she left at 8, took kids to school and then walked thier hence the rush to leave at 8am.

Its only been this week and last week that she has said 'Has he had his breakfast yet?' and pulled a face when I said no but then when OH picked him up she asked him to have breakfast at home.

We never had an issue before this.

Surely they don't go to a play centre everyday??? That sounds like madness. Children & babies need far more variety in their daily life. He should be doing arts & crafts, home corner style play, outdoor exploration & play, reading, mark making and the list goes on and on. Where are the childcare giver interactions and the early education going on if she is taking your child to a play centre so often.

If it were my child we were talking about, I would have a serious problem with this arrangement. To answer your original question...YES, she should be sorting breakfast. The nursery my daughter went to, would also get them dressed. You literally picked them up out of bed and took them in. That way, they can get more sleep. Good luck sorting out this situation. Stand up for what you agreed initially.

The cm probably has to drop older kids at school & then straight on the playgroup, they don't have unlimited time & most cm's, unlike nursery take their charges out in the mornings. Most cm's come back home by lunch so that is not an issue but they do expect breakfast to be gievn by the parents. I never sent my son without breakfast first,he started going to CM at 8months.
I don't respond to stupid so that's why I am ignoring you.
