I've just been on the phone to sky currently paying 64 pounds for sky tv fibre bb and landline. Told them i wanted to cancel as i was going to virgin which is cheaper. He did offer me free landline for a year but that wasn't anywhere near what i'd be paying with virgin. I told them how much i was going to pay which is about half the price of sky. They have cancelled sky tv and was given a date for the switch off but they said i couldn't cancel bb and landline until virgin had been in touch with them as its ofcom regulated where its 14 days from the day virgin gets in touch to supply a new telephone and BB. is this just a load of twaddle ? what if i decided i didn't want bb or a landline. I think it was just a way for me not to cancel bb and telephone i've taken his name and noted the time of the call just in case they say i need another 31 days for bb and telephone.

edit i haven't actually ordered anything with virgin yet as i'm hoping sky come back with a better deal but i'm doubtful they will as if i haven't actually cancelled my bb or telephone ? "confused"

Clearly, since Virgin have their own Network, they don't get in touch with Sky or BT prior to installation. As you say, it's twaddle. Cancel the services now if you are serious about wanting to leave.

You've told Sky you are leaving to go to a half price deal with Virgin, as far as they know you've already made the arrangements. If you leave off getting in touch with Virgin you are likely to be without any TV, Broadband or telephone service at the end of your notice period.

thanks for the reply i did tell him that i hadn't ordered with virgin as yet that i'd phoned virgin and looked at virgin media's website for the latest offers. This is when he said he wouldn't cancel BB or landline as it only takes 14 days when virgin gets in touch with sky as they take the line over at this time ? but at no point do virgin take the line over during this process or am i wrong ? the more i think about the conversation the more twaddle i'm remembering.

The loss of tv bb and landline for a few days isn't too dire i can do without them for a short period. Virgin updates the offers at the start of each month so i may hold off until next week.

If you don't arrange a Virgin installation until your cancellation takes place, you are likely to be waiting far more than just a "few days" with no services.

Just to reiterate, Virgin don't "take over the line" at all because they have their own network.

is he on about this as you want to keep your number?
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

No i never mentioned keeping my number. i think when i told him i could get things far cheaper with virgin he came out with the well i won't cancel your line rental and broadband as it only takes 14 days from the time that virgin gets in touch with us. If only i had recorded the conversation.

I've made a note of his name and the time of the call if they say its 31 days from any point other than today i'll ask for the call to be listened to and make a complaint. He was literally talking cra* I'm not going to do anything until virgin announce any new offers hopefully in afew days.

Why bother complaining? Just arrange the cancellation! Or are you expecting "compensation"?

Where have you got the idea that Virgin update their offers "at the beginning of each month"?

    Actually...

Its called a 3rd party transfer. Industry standard way of moving lines and networks between suppliers and since 90% of virgins coverage is only fibre to the exchange they are readily able to take over and transfer to their own network.

I know I am right as I work in the industry.

Virgin will install their own cabling and the broadband &telephony will not share any link to BT or Sky unless the customer is in an area where Virgin broadband is not available. There was nothing in the OP's post to indicate he might not be in a cabled area.

yes i am in a cable area i've been looking at the virgin website over the past 4-5 months so it usually is the start of the month when virgin updates the offers give or take afew days.

I don't want any compensation from sky what would it be for lol ? they have given me a very good service throughout my contract. but i was on the phone 30+ minutes waiting for the disconnection team to take my call i'm not going to wait another 30+ minutes to do something i've already done. I know i asked to be disconnected so if they quibble with my date in the future i'll tell them to listen to the call and ask them to comment on the CS waffle.

You do realise that, if you proceed as you plan, you're likely going to be on the 'phone to them for far longer than thirty minutes and you'll continue paying for the "cancelled" broadband until they sort it out?

I strongly recommend you ring them back and ensure that your notice for ALL services is already in place. By doing this now, you'll also increase the likelihood of Sky making you an offer to stay.
