Things to learn:

Don't send stuff abroad.

Biggest lesson I have discovered from eBay. It's just easier that way.

PayPal are awful though and I try not to sell anything on eBay these days. They will always side with the buyer unless there is a proper ace up your sleeve. I made a request once for a full refund on something, even though only one item was missing. As the other company did nothing, PayPal refunded me the whole lot. The company did cause me hassle though and the items were not worth what I paid for them, plus the missing item doesn't even fit properly! So no, I don't feel bad. They had a chance to contest it and din't.

.

To balance this anecdotal evidence, 20% of my sales go abroad, and I rarely have a problem. Certainly proportionally no more than domestic UK sales.

I must say this is why I don't post stuff abroad or ever have any balance on my Paypal account. I always either spend or transfer to my account.

Have you actually put an appeal in online?

1. Log in to your PayPal account.
2. Click Resolution Centre near the top of the page.
3. Under 'Resolution Centre Cases' select Closed cases in the drop down menu and find the claim.
4. Under 'Action', click Appeal.
5. Provide information for your appeal.

On the basis of perentages most of my issues have been with UK buyers- does that mean then I should panic and only sell overseas in future?

catmiaow, merely removing your funds from the paypal account only means they will chase and harrass you for years to come- it doesn't help to avoid the debt.

• UPDATE:

Well I phoned and spoke to PayPal on my partner's behalf. I made it very clear we were tired of their incompetence with the matter. The guy I spoke to looked at the claim history and said the Buyer should never have been refunded as he didn't supply the accurate tracking information as requested. The guy I spoke to blamed someone in their Philippines office for closing the claim which seemed very questionable.

He said they would refund my partner within 24-72 hours the full £103 minus fees. At this point I pointed out they had already told us the Paypal fees would be waived when I first phone them. It took me 5 minutes to get him to understand they owed us the full £103. I have a feeling we still won't get the full amount owed to us!

PayPal have made an absolute mess of this claim. They have 'resolved' it incorrectly 3 times now and their communication with my partner has been dire.

If the money isn't refunded this time I will send them a final demand via registered post as suggested earlier.

Final question, as the jacket was second hand and sold via auction to someone outside the UK I am right in thinking there is no reason why we should have to refund postage costs given the jacket was not faulty or incorrectly described, correct?

I know but I feel better knowing my balance is zero.

Can't they just take it out of your bank account?
Surely you can just let them chase you for years and years, until they give up?

Hi, you can report to police as the same thing happened to me 3yrs ago... Go online to 'Action fraud' and fill out the forms. This site was given to me by the police and will be dealt with 100%.

I sold a very expensive cashmere jumper for £150 for which the buyer, located in Germany, bought by using her registered credit card via PayPal. ...6 MONTHS later!! a chargeback was issued against my sale, as she stated she didn't receive it! Of course by that time, i had ditched the proof of posting (Signed for International) but she forgot she had left me positive feedback at the time :p ...I also emailed her via ebay to ask about the chargeback and she confirmed she had received the jumper and was happy?!!!

Of course PayPal immediately took all of this money from my empty account, putting me overdrawn in my bank:mad: ...After weeks of lengthy and stressful negotiations with PayPal, they refused to refund me despite acknowledging the buyer was clearly fibbing.

So i filed a report for Fraud on Action Fraud, and got a full refund by PayPal within 3 days :j ...

Don't take any crap from them!

Good luck!

Many thanks for your reply! If the money isn't back in my partner's account by Wednesday this is what I will certainly be doing.

She received an email today from PayPal following my lengthy phone call with them on Saturday saying:

From: service@paypal.co.uk
Date: 1 July 2013 17:05:47 BST

Dear Stephanie ##,

We finished looking into your case and we decided in matthieu ## 's
favour. Here's the case information:

Buyer's name: matthieu devaux
Buyer's email: ##
Transaction ID: ####

Transaction date: 21 May 2013
Transaction amount: 103.00 GBP
Your transaction ID: ####
Case number: PP-##

Refund amount: 103.00 GBP

We've already refunded them the money from your account and the case is now
closed. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough money in your account to cover
the refund, so you now have a negative balance in your PayPal account.

To resume buying and selling, please bring the account balance to above
zero.

Yours sincerely,

PayPal

I'm really unhappy that was sent! The nerve of them...

Well 72 hours have passed and PayPal have not returned the money they took so we have reported them for fraud as chocolateflake suggested.

Thanks for that advice! Now we shall just have to wait and see.

Is it possible to claim additional damages against PayPal for all the time they have wasted? We must have spent 6+ hours collecting information/dealing with them trying to get the money back plus the cost of all the phone calls.
