At best the BMW and Merc will get 25mpg which at the current rate is an annual fuel bill of £3570.

    .

I run an old Merc C200 (1994 car and an auto) it does 400 miles on a tank, mixed driving so a solid 30mpg.

It is more than possible to get decent miles out of these cars.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

If you read the full thread, the Merc I was referring to was an E320, not a C200. 15k miles a year in one is not going to save the Op a penny.

The V6 Merc and the 528 might be thirsty beasts, but if they were closer, I'd have hoovered them up by now.

So can you explain why when I had that engine in a lighter car with a manual box it got 28 mpg lifetime average?
And why my mate who has one of these exact cars only manual gets 25 mpg?
And why the manufacturer quotes 26mpg combined?
And why Fuelly reports an average of 23 mpg?

I promise you, you absolutely did not get "late 30's"mpg average out of a 528i auto. No way. did not happen. Lies, or mistaken. Or oly drove downhill with the car in neutral.

The OP should expect no more than 25 mpg out of this car, and should base her sums on this figure.

Check out the gearing of the 5 speed manuals, the are quite high compared to the auto which is ticking over.

Out of the 8 BMW 528's we had, 7 of them would do late 30's quite easily. The one that didnt was the one with the tow bar that got used for dragging stuff about.

Even the 540i we had was better than one of the 530d's..!

Hence why we binend all the diesels off and now have petrols again.

Diesel just isnt worth it, unless you're a taxi driver.

Given the mileage and mpg listed for that BMW, i'd personally avoid. BMW's can suck up high miles quite easily, but at 200k on most petrols is going to take it's toll.

The risk of an expensive failure and combined with being thirsty i personally would avoid, especially if you're looking to save money.

    Fuel info from Autotrader

Overview Vehicle Summary Performance & Economy Dimensions Interior/Exterior Safety
    Fuel consumption (urban) 18.2 mpg
Fuel consumption (extra urban) 35.3 mpg
    Fuel consumption (combined) 26.4 mpg

    As do you.

Post #33 I didn't say to buy this particular Merc and didn't comment on it. However, Mercs generally, can be cheap to buy and run with chain driven bullet proof motors. One that has had any rust issues sorted is a serious contender in the bangernomics arena, especially given the space the OP needs

  • the rover 75/MG ZTcdti is good vehicle, strong engine (bmw diesel) engine and returns some pretty good MPG on long commute trips, down side, fuel pumps can go faulty.

the 2.0-2.5 v6 can be pretty good for long distance aswell there are some good working LPG converted ones out there aswell although go for bit more money.

ford galaxy the wifes dad had one in petrol version was a mechanical nightmare.

the seat alhambra (same MPV as a galaxy with a seat badge) a friend had 1.9 TDI although not a quick MPV he loved it and raved how good the fuel consumption was as he only used it for outings with the family to the coast or to france and used it as a van a couple of times.

Well I'm well and truly confused :-/

Another option would be to get for example, a diesel fiesta (67 mpg) for approx 7K (plus my 2K neg eq.) over 2 years....? I've worked it out to be pretty much the same monthly payment as I've got now but will be getting much better mileage nd I could hand it in after a year if I wanted to?

I'm crazy busy with work from tomorrow so I think I'll just chill out and re think prior to my 3 weeks off in August.

    I need a drink!!

I hate to say it but buy a diesel mondeo, they just go on forever and very economical to run and maintain.
