My eye is driving me mad!

Three days ago I was just watching tv when my right eye suddenly became very irratated, and started watering as though I was chopping onions.
I went to bed shortly after and when I woke up it was the same, it felt like something was in it so I did several warm salty eye baths throughout the day but it remained the same. It not a contant irratation, it comes and goes.
As it was no better yesterday I went to the doctors, he put the drops in and used the light but couldn't see anything, I got a precription for antihistimine drops because it was the only thing he could think of. I have never had any signs of hayfever before and think its very unlikly to be that.
I am going to a wedding evening do tonight and at this rate I will have masacra running down my face! Is there anything else it could be, could I have scratched it maybe? I look such a mess, like I am crying all the time, just from one eye! Has anyone has this before? Theres no discharge apart from tears, its not bloodshot but my eyelid looks a little swollen.
