O2 - contracts
Just cant believe the attitude of this company. Can anyone suggest anything?
Story so far, I asked for a 1 year contract with O2 last May. Now year has finsihed Ive decided to go to T-mobile for a business account, and so Ive let the contract lapse, with O2- thinking that is the contracts run out then thats it.
Rang O2, as I wanted the PAT code, and was told that I had to write to them giving 1 months notice. BUT, the contract runs out on first of JUNE 07. Then i wont have a contract with you, I said, so why would I want to pay you another months money for nothing!, im not extending the contact, out of respect for you I rang to tell you im moving - following your 5 calls to my mobile that I wouldnt be renewing. AND NOW! you tell me that i have to write to you to cancel or this still goes on, EVEN THOUGH I signed up for a 12 month contract. THATS what i thought I was getting not a fluid its here until you tell contract. Is this illegal????? :money: Please help. Surely if the contract has lapsed and I didnt renew they cant just ask for money for a further month!

You are wrong, they are right.
Read the terms and conditions of your contract.Well life is harsh, hug me don't reject me.0 -
When you take out a contract with any mobile phone company, the 1st 12 months is just the minimum term and the contract is going to last forever unless you give them 30 days notice to have it cancelled. So the earliest date that you can give them the notice is after 11 months.
For O2, they only accept written notice which is to be sent to:
O2 Disconnections, PO Box 242, Houghton Regis, Dunstable LU5 5WA.
Alternatively, you can send them a secured e-mail via their website.
Unfortunately, you have to get the timing of giving notice to mobile phone companies right meticulously to avoid getting charged more than the 12 months Minimum Term.0 -
AP - Thank you for your helpful comments, Im over the poor service I felt I recieved yesterday, I thought I was buying a service just for 12 months as i believed my contract said. Any way, i now am the proud owner of a Blackberry Pearl, and my electronic reminders are set for the 11th month to cancel should I need to. They will never do it to me again...Thanks again for your kind comments. x0

I have been wondering about the 1 month written notice you have to give O2 and about getting the timing right.
My contract began on the 20th of July last year so when the 12 months minimum is up I want my contract to end. The question I want answering is do I have to post my cancellation request so that it arrives bang on the 20th of June this year or is there any leeway allowed, i.e. if they receive it on the 22nd or the 18th of June will my contract still finish on the 20th og July?0 -
i called up and asked for PAC and they gave it to me within 48 hours

You have to give the notice so that it arrives at O2 on 20/06/07, or before as the 30 day period commences when they receive it i.e. if they receive it on the 22nd, they will charge you 2 days extra line rental. If they receive it on the 18th, you still have to pay up to the 20th - the end of the Minimum Term.
As mentioned in my earlier post, you must get the timing meticulously right to avoid getting overcharged. Apart from sending them the written notice, I suggest you send a secured e-mail to them via the O2 website on 19/06/07, by copying and pasting the whole content of your notice.
I think they are also charging line rental on the day of disconnection which I disagree. The reason being that you pay a full day's line rental on the day of connection, even if you get connected at 11.55pm, so why should you also pay a full day's line rental on the day of disconnection when you get disconnected at say 9.00am - and have no service for the rest of the day?0 -
AP are you saying that the timing has to be exact because O2 will cut you off 30 days from the date they receive the notice but still charge you up to the end of the 12 months? e.g. From my example if O2 get my notice on the 18th of June, they will cut the service on the 18th of July but still charge up until the 20th of July. If that is the case then I am going to have to rely on Royal mail not screwing up. These companies bend every rule and situation to their financial advantage don't they? There is no let up for customers sadly.0

There is no such need to get the timing perfect.
You don't have to give 30 days notice, you have to give at least 30 days notice.
So, simply send it early with an 'In effect from' date.

I posted the notice to their disconnection department by first class unrecorded post on Saturday 26/05/07 and sent a secured e-mail to them via their website on Tuesday 29/05/07. The following is the reply from them:
Hello xxx,
Thanks for your email regarding mobile number xxxxxxxxxx.
We're sorry to hear that you wish to cancel your contract with O2.
You're still in contract until 30 June 2007.
Therefore, we have set your disconnection date to fit with your end of contract date. If this isn't suitable, and you'd prefer an earlier date, please call us on 08705 860 860.
Lines are open Monday to Friday between 8:00am and 8:00pm, Saturday and Sunday between 9:00am and 6:00pm. Calls are charged at national rate.
A final bill will be sent within 7-14 days of the disconnection date above, which will include any charges or credits due on your account.
If you have any questions, please contact us on the above number.
Best regards,

Thanks AP. Your 12 months finishes one month before mine does so I will just go ahead and use your dates except I will substitute June for May.0
