So wouldn't each service pack install all the previous security updates?

    No idea, you tell me.

Windows 8 is a good idea, but Microshaft are the wrong people to implement it. An OS which can be used in essentially the same manner across all interfaces is definitely the future; but now is not the time, and again Microshaft are not the people for it.
Windows Vista was a terrible idea right from the start - a truly atrocious operating system.
Windows XP is generally held as the most stable of all Windows. As long as you have your security software running and up to date, even the end of MS support shouldn't be seen as an issue. Its user friendly and pretty solid.
Windows 7 is also very good; while technically similar to Vista in many respects, it operates substantially faster and with much greater compatibility.

If your system has a 64bit processor, definitely get 64 bit Win 7. If you're only on 32 Bit, XP should serve you just fine for a good few years yet.

Ah, it's been extensively tested on 2 XP PCs. That's conclusive proof that security updates are a waste of time then.

    No, it's just my experience.

Those in support of keeping XP seem to be assuming though that the AV's will continue to update develop their products for XP though. I don't think anyone can be sure whether or not that will happen. Websites for example come to a point where older versions of IE won't work on them. I think AV's will be the same and products will not be compatible with XP. How long that will take though is anyone's guess.

I replaced my desktop a few months ago and after reading all bad reviews I was reluctant to install windows 8 but I decided to give it a go. After using it for a few month I fail to see what all the fuss is about and am very happy with it.

Ditto after a netbook failure. Now I can't wait to save up enough to replace the desktop and ditch XP for good! XP was a very good system but I am more than happy with the alternative in Win8. I have my criticism's around it of course but they by no means outweigh the good parts. These days it can even be made to look and act like XP/7 with free software.

    I don't accept and install updates. I've installed service packs 2 & 3, but that's it.
Please get off the internet - you're the type of person that spreads viruses!
Security updates are included in the Service packs, and SP3 is years old. There have been stacks of security updates since that, that you don't have and that makes your computer vulnerable. Keeping an antivirus on your computer up to date isn't the same.
Anyway, XP is fine up until 2014, you're not being scared into switching, it was brought out in 2001 or 2002, so is already one of the longest supported OSs there has been.
  • Dont do linux. Vote the xp.

It's more stable than people think.

Hacker are more interested in win 7/8.

Hmmm, yet I've never had a virus or similar on any machine other than the one that was running Vista... Bizarre, eh?

If hackers aren't interested in XP, then they'll be less so with Windows 98... so that's my vote :p
