The first step should be to find out if your computer is capable of being upgraded, as it may be up to12 years old. You can download an upgrade advisor from Microsoft here

    As much as Win 8?

In expectation of flames, Win 8 may be worth looking at...
How much memory and disk space do you have?
    Run the upgrade advisor :-

    Buy Win8Pro for £50

OR you may be able to get Win 7 licenses much cheaper? Ebay?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Even if MS doesn't support it, it still works.

Be honest, in all the time you've used XP, have you EVER asked MS for support specific to XP?

The trouble is that MS will cease providing any further security updates.

Keep XP if its all working for you - good advice that's been repeated above.
'Not Supported' just means they'll not be issuing updates etc. for it anymore - but its not like you really need these to begin with. Ensure your antivirus is good (avast, as recommended above is my preference) and stays up to date and you'll have no problems.
If you really feel the need, you could go for a Win 7 option (I'd personally steer clear of 8); but you could find it runs significantly slower depending on your system. A good system may actually see a speed increase moving to 7.
    I'd stick where you are.

Hackers will increasingly attack XP - there's a huge installed user base, and with no more security updates there are good opportunities to be had.

Upgrade to Win 7. It's so not a pain.
