Moving to USA, can I get out of Orange contract?

Hi,

I am moving to America is just over 5 weeks and I was wondering if there was any chance I could cancel my 24 month contract with Orange. I am half way through the contract and don't really want to be paying monthly for a phone I won't be using. However, I don't expect it to be easy and I'm guessing I'm probably going to have to buy out of the contract.

Any help is appreciated!
Thank you in advance.

All you need to do is ring Orange on 150 and ask for your early termination penalty.

Once paid, the contract is terminated.

Yup - but don't ask 'for an early termination penalty' - that's simply provocation (although the end result may be the same).

Phone up and say you are having to relocate abroad, could you suspend your contract until your return? [No] but this means they'll lay out your options. If you are straight with them, they may reciprocate.
  • Have you got any friends who might want to take on the remainder off your contract, you would be able to keep an eye on the bills online to make sure you don't get any large unexpected bills, just get them to pay you for their call and data costs, offer then a discount it will still work out cheaper than paying off your contract

Why did you sign up to a 24-month contract without being 100% sure that you would remain in the UK for this very long period? Why didn't you sign up to a 1-month or 12-month contract instead?

Is it a rhetoric question? I think the answer is obvious.
And, to be pedantic, 100% is something impossible to achieve in real life, let alone to calculate.

Some of the worst advice I have ever seen on here.

Hi, you are correct , you will have to pay the remaining months minus the VAT unless you want your credit rating trashed, although I suppose that wouldn't matter if you weren't coming back .:think:

Yes that's correct. Not sure what magic solution you were hoping for.

I don't think the OP was asking for any "magic" solution, merely probing to see if the money savers on here might have any experience of alternative options.

    This was my thoughts.
While not "right", it's not like they need your money so if you're not coming back or don't envision coming back then just remove the sim / get the phone unlocked, then cancel the DD. But be warned, it will have consequences... just not financial for you at this time.
