DPF- Hope i have the abbreviation correct....

    Thanks to everyone who replied (although a lot of posts went waay over my head :o)

    Just to clarify a few points.

    It's a Peugeot 308 1.6 diesel 09 plate

    When i passed my test, i was taught (maybe wrongly?) 45mph plus should be 5th gear. What i meant by 'the car doesn't like it' it seems to my ears its straining (a bit like doing 25 in 1st iyswim?)

    Forgive my ignorance! i'm a bit of a dunce and even at my age (not disclosing that ;)) i'm not sure of many things when it comes to owning a car :o





    Forgot to add, it doesn't say anything about a DPF in the manual....

    Ash in DPF comes not from fuel but from (mainly) oil additives, and also from engine wear and corrosion - there are some trace elements in the fuel that eventually end up in the DPF, but they are in insignificant quantities. So redlining your diesel in fact increases engine wear and oil burn, therefore it slowly kills your DPF. Premium fuel with fairy dust doesn't make any difference to DPF, changing oil regularly and treating the engine nicely does.

    I keep the cars for 80-90k mile, so paired with the fact it spends most of its life cruising international motorways (although when I'm in the UK, it's mainly London roads), my driving overall may actually do the engines some good, hence I haven't had problems.

    Depends on the version, some 1.6hdi had DPF, some didn't. There's a check you can do online with the VIN to find out. Careful with the turbo on that too, not PSAs most reliable engine.

    There are problems with some of the 1.6 HDI engines where the longer service intervals coupled with leaking injector seals cause premature failure in the turbos. When it happens, it turns out the inside of the engine is that dirty that it often happens again very soon after a new turbo is fitted. Sometimes a few miles, sometimes a few thousand,

    Thanks for explaining. Bursts like this makes sense. (Unless it's done at sufficiently low revs to cause DMF damage I guess...)

    As you seem well informed about this, do you happen to have any data about the actual rates of forced DPF regerations at garages or of DPF failures? Just curious as to the real extent of the problem.

    That's about right for most cars from a fuel economy point of view. The issue with driving at too low revs in top gear becomes possible DMF (dual mass flywheel) damage. I used to sometimes drive at 30 mph in 5th gear (about 1,000 rpm) but have stopped doing so for this reason.

    I understand. Having changed from driving at lower revs than I do now I remember having similar thoughts about doing 30 mph in 3rd gear (which was partly why I guessed what your concern might be). It's more a question of what you're used to than the car struggling.

    No. If you had a DPF fault requiring a forced regeneration at a garage, or a more serious repair, then this would need doing at the time (not when the next service is due).

    I will try the revs thing on my next journey. How do i find out if it's even got this filter thing?
