As a Mum of a baby who is already being asked about 1st Birthday and Christmas - I also say no more teddies lol but Jigsaws, books, duplo, happyland, buggy toys, bath toys, all these things can be picked up on a variety of budgets.

One thing without sounding too ungrateful try to find a not so popular book. i.e we have loads of gruffalo and guess how much I love you etc
Everything is always better after a cup of tea

I started buying for my close friends children from birth.
At one point I was buying for 14 children.

If I had my time over again I wouldn't buy for any of them. It's cost me a fortune over the years.

Yes, I would limit giving presents to when you are invited to a party otherwise it will get out of hand.

If you haven't bought anything for the other baby whose party you aren't going to, then perhaps you could give a present this time but then I wouldn't in future years unless you are a god parent.

And it isn't just the money, it's the time choosing the presents as well.

I found clarks shoe vouchers really helpful for both my boys 1st birthday. ( really boring present but they had enough toys) Shoes r so expensive and after a few aunties put in £5/£10 each had enough for there first pair.

Going to go back to my original idea of books, plus that's what I'd most enjoy choosing :)
If you'll enjoy choosing one then this has got to be the right answer.
Do the parents enjoy reading to the child? And/or will you read the book you buy to the child? If so, I'd suggest "Tiddler". It's by the same people as the Gruffalo but not as common so less chance of it being a duplicate. It's a brilliant story to read aloud with a really fast, fun pace.

DS loved them as a baby, apart from what OH called "psycho-teddy" in the "That's Not My Teddy" book, the one with the glittery, scary eyes. It scared him.
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

Whatever you buy, don't write on it and keep the original packaging and the receipt ;).
I was given vouchers for all three of my boys, some of which I still have. I use them to buy appropriate gifts for them as and when I need to.

Books - I second the 'that's not my......' series. My boys also love 'Ten tiny tadpoles' and 'Ten wiggly wriggly caterpillars'.
