How about some bath toys, you can't really go wrong with them - unless they don't have a bath of course ;)

great idea - my toddler would play for hours in the bath with floating bath toys, stuck-to the wall water wheels, those little squishy bath animals which you can squirt water from, jugs, plastic cups, my niece has some really cute bath flutes too :D.

Definitely take a gift, and as others have said, no soft toys!

My (childless) brother bought my 3yo DD a 5ft high stuffed giraffe for Christmas. It is huge and useless although she does actually love it but I still wish he'd spent the money (a lot of money!) on something else. Or asked me what she'd like. It could have gone towards a playhouse which is something she REALLY wants.

    Honestly, a 5ft high giraffe!

She loves it though, and he clearly loves her. Its a story to tell if nothing else...

I know. And I found a space for it in her room, but I had to prise it away from my Dad (favourite animal is apparentl giraffe although who knew?) who had given it a name and everything...

Maybe it's just me who doesn;t like it.

I started buying for my close friends children from birth.
At one point I was buying for 14 children.

If I had my time over again I wouldn't buy for any of them. It's cost me a fortune over the years.

I agree with those who say to take a small present in place of a card. You shouldn't need to spend more than £5 - you'll be able to find a nice board book for that.

Perhaps consider something for 2 year olds rather than 1 year olds? They probably have lots of books for their current age group, but few to 'grow into'.

If it helps, my LO is coming up to 2 now, and likes the Tiger who came to tea, Zog, the Gruffalo, Spot books (books with flaps are a big favourite!), and she also loves the tiny little books you can get that are child-sized.

My son never liked soft toys - he was actively scared of a teddy that my best mate bought him, and ignored the rest. He did sometimes go to sleep with a (very hard and nobbly) Thomas the Tank Engine clutched to his breast, though!

I'm in a similar situation, except I'll be buying for a two-year-old girl.

I am wondering about things like summer clothes, sun hats, things like that that they might need (should we get a summer this year )

Or bath toys/toys for the paddling pool?

It doesn't need to cost much, but personally I would buy something rather than go empty-handed :)

We always used to go down the PJ route as all the children I know wear pyjamas and you get them a little bit bigger so they will grow into them too but can wear them straight away if they want to if you know what I mean.

You do have to be careful about falling into this trap too!
