As a parent.. for the love of all that is holy do NOT get a stuffed toy!!!

Books are fantastic.. I'd particularly appreciate one which is a little bit advanced to 'grow in to' lift the flap and pop up books are destroyed in seconds however lovely they are babies don't care..

My tiddlers love the books with noisy buttons on.. and M&S do some great ones which have nursery rhymes and 4 noisy buttons.. I think those are favourites in here at the moment.. wheels on the bus and incy wincy in particular! though we have loads of them.

Wooden alphabet jigsaws we like too, duplo, stacking cups and blocks are fun. And the drawing boards things.. like the magnadoodle style but the cheapy ones are great because they do trash them.

If in doubt.. a pair of wellies! (which was just autocorrected to willies which is less appropriate :p)

Yeah, they bore kids senseless don't they? My boy just bites them then launches them across the room shrieking. Which is fairly entertaining I suppose.... :D

I don't have a lot of soft toys in my adult house, but we have a few, which babies often adore. If they show a particular affiliation and the parents don't mind (some are not politically correct) I will gift one. I am well aware its the gift most likely to end up at Oxfam or in the loft, but when the kid is still carting it around ten years later its kind of touching :o.

Soft toys are the work of the devil. We've literally got thousands and every night DS (7) will pack his bed with them to the point where you can hardly see him. And this is after donating loads and loads to charity shops.

I used to think of the year ahead, or the time up until Christmas when buying a present for a little one rather than just focussing on they are 1 today, so anything that they'd likely grow into in the next 6 months.

All children are different with their likes and dislikes, my 10 yo daughter has never put 2 pieces of building bricks together in her life, but adored soft toys, more so than dolls and used to teach them and play houses with them and still sleeps with her special one every night.

13yo son never even had a favourite teddy but adored lego and toys that you constructed from the first time he was given some.

Books you do run the risk of duplication unless you know what they already have.
  • Great answers thanks everyone.

    Teddys duly crossed off list!

Going to go back to my original idea of books, plus that's what I'd most enjoy choosing :)

Jigsaws are really popular with most of the toddlers I know. Keeps them busy for a bit, don't take up too much space, don't make any noise, and the pieces don't hurt if you stand on them in bare feet!

How about some bath toys, you can't really go wrong with them - unless they don't have a bath of course ;)
