Free Boiler - Pension Credit

Hi all,

Not sure if this is in the right place - so if not apologies.

My father is 64 and on Pension Credit. He / We have made an application 8/9 weeks ago for a Free Boiler as he is on Pension Credit. Someone came round immediately and did an assessment and said yes he is eligible for one. He also said he can have loft insulation as well.

Nothing happened for a few weeks and then someone contacted us re the loft insulation - they came round and did it. My father explained re the boiler and he was given a different number for someone else. Since then we have had a few phone calls asking to come around an do an inspection - i've informed them that it has been done. They said they are a different company and would do the process for him. They came round again last week and we are now waiting again.

A few questions:

How does this all work and i seem to be getting calls daily from people saying they will provide the service.

How long should it take?

Has anyone got any success stories of getting a free boiler?

Has anyone got a number of anyone to speak to that would advise without all the salesmany type talk.

Also my father will only be on Pension Credit for a limited time as he is due to take state / private pensions - will this effect him.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Hi

Yes read re green deal. There is no loan / comes off bill etc.

I think this part of the affordable warmth deal.

My main question is he has had two assessments carried out and both agreed he was eligibile for one but then heard nothing. Is it just a case of trying different ones and hoping someone comes up with the installation - just after someone to point me in the right direction. Google leads me on a merry dance!

    Cheers

    - if both assessments were free he has lost nothing
    - if each assessment cost £150 he has lost £300, because nothing has happened
    - if he continues to spend money on more assessments he will continue lose even more money

Look stop wasting money, you only need one assessment. If you read the thread I gave you it says :

    - 10,000 assessments x £££ each completed
    - 100 assessments converted !
    - 100 assessments converted, but how many are started ? or completed ?

So 10,000 people have paid for an assessment and almost no one has had the work done. Your dad is one of 10,000 people who paid and have heard nothing. Your chances are the same as anyone else's. Now not everyone agrees with me as you will see from this thread, in my opinion at the moment you have the same chance as everyone had for the last 6 months, there are 10,000 other people waiting and nothing is happening for them either at the moment.

Its certainly the case that your idea of paying for a third and fourth and fifth assessment in the hope that you will magically get it done when no one else can .. .. .. is not a good idea. Sorry glynm15.

If your dad already gets the (1) 'guarantee' element of pension credit its more than very likely it will continue into state pension age. Additionally if your dad has a private pension contribution paid throughout his life he will also get the (2) 'Savings' element of pension credit. Its the 'guarantee' element of pension credit that is used by the DWP to passport WHD and other energy related help.

He has never paid for an assessment and never will.

He has had cavity wall done and loft insulation for free.

My initial scepticism was that he has had two boiler assessments and both agreed that it was inefficient and as he was on pension credit he qualified for the free boiler - what happens now was our question - we pass your details to an installer and they will be in touch - then nothing.

If its a case of pot luck and keep trying then that's fine.

I was quite disturbed that the assessors couldn't give straight answers to who they are / work for / who we contact. Leading me to believe its a big scam rather than a poorly organised lottery.

We now have 3rd assessment booked so will update accordingly.

I find this post a bit disturbing - it sounds like the OP is getting a bit upset that he wont be able to get a FREE boiler within a timescale tha allows his father to get one before he starts getting both a private and state pensions and therefore probably won't qualify.

It may be strictly legal but it sounds a bit immoral to me that someone should be trying to manipulate the system again. He's already managed to get free loft insulation - something that the rest of us have had to pay for already and he still wants more

For someone to get a free boiler, the rest of us who are paying our taxes have to pay for it.
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers

glynm15, If you had read what I gave you on two occasions, and .. .. this post here you would understand why you are having no success mate.

Thanks Richie - just trying to get a better understanding of what is happening / due to happen under a very confusing scheme.

As for matelodave - I assume your just one of them ill informed busy bodies who fills there uninteresting days by posting irrelevant information / opinions on a forum that is designed to help and inform people when they have exhausted other avenues.

I never once mentioned his haste to get it done to beat the system. My question was he is on Pension Credit for a limited time so will this effect him - an answer of yes would be sufficient.

As for making a comment about a 64 year old man who has worked for the same firm since he was 15 and paying taxes is quite laughable.

Both the loft insulation and boiler installation process was started by a phone call from a sales person - and the process of looking in to it would have never entered by dads head.

They only upset this causing me is the fact that a my father is worried and confused that he is receiving phone calls and people visiting his house and he is unaware of what is actually happening.

I suppose by your thought process he should refuse his bus pass when he is 65 as people like you are still paying taxes!

An opinion[ated] reply might help you understand. The industry was hijacked by the big companies. An independent assessor might do about 4 a day at £100+, he has no axe to grind, no affiliation. Get a free one from anywhere and you dad will be plagued by shonky double glazing types sent there by their company to get something anything sold to your dad to get the company some money. They will never rest till they empty your dads pockets. Its their job, he gave them his details, they will pursue him. Hopefully you will make sure he signs nothing and never hands over money without checking with his family first.

That's been done twice, and you were prepared to go for a third of fourth attempt, that would just mean 4 times the amount of people chasing your dad, ringing him up, coming to his home and selling his details to someone else. If and when anything happens on the free boiler front it will appear in this group as quick as it appears on the TV, check back on this forum from time to time and you will spot it.

    Best of luck lad.

Some seriously bad advice on here. A few of the large energy companies are paying for free insulation and boilers for those on low income. Your Dad is on low income and is entitled to it. It is NOT a loan and does not need to be paid back.

The first assessment is on the house. There will also be assessments for the boiler (by a gas fitter) and an insulation company (not always) before they can carry out the job.

The companies are getting given strict time scales by government and is usually 21 days from the date of the initial assessment. If he's entitled to it now that is fine. If he is due to inherit a million pounds the day after it is fitted, that too is fine.

    Hope that helps.
