I'm suffering from a complete lack of outrage on this one.

Cold beer! Outside! On a hot day! Consumed by adults! At a casual fun family event! Ye gods!

Just for the record the beers werent even cold as they had no ice buckets or baths they were just stacked on the table, IMO kind of pointless having lukewarm beer on a scorching hot day, I certainly wouldnt buy warm beer;)

    Would you sell cigarettes?

Alcohol is a drug, many drink responsibly and many don't.

I think if I was the child of an alcoholic parent who was making my home life hell I'd be very confused by my school selling them beer on my sports day.

  • I think if they want to sell beer that's good only chilled they need an ice bucket!

365 our one had a greasy stall, burgers etc like your theory re alchies does that mean anyone who has suffered a heart attack will be insulted to a burger being sold!

Ease up dads like a cold beer watching their kids at play :rotfl:

I think despite what people think is that most people are responsible and may purchase a beer to enjoy and raise a few funds for the school. Maybe it shows responsible drinking to children. Can't see what the harm is tbh. People with a drink problem are not going to be affected by the school selling beer as they would have most likely sourced drink elsewhere.
No Matter what you do there will be critics.
  • A bit like saying cant sell treats at tuck shop as any overweight people will be tempted.
  • There's ways round the licensing laws - say you sell raffle tickets for £3 and get a free beer with it - you don't need a licence to give it away.

However, I don't think it 'necessary' to have beer available at a daytime school event. Plenty of other options - soft drinks/tea/coffee - which would give a better return for the school funds.

To not provide anything for the children is terrible - what about the ones who forgot to bring a drink or their parents can't be there to watch and provide additional drinks.

Our PTA used to bring out ice poles in cool boxes at the end of sports day for all the children that wanted them.

I'm another one who can't quite see what the issue is.

tbh it sounds as if the OP has a bee in her bonnet about them not providing drinks for children and have used the fact that the school are selling beers to beat them over the back with it as a result.

Your probably right then:cool: because surely selling alcohol at a school event is more important than providing kids with cold refreshments!

  • Oh no sexy I would say there should be kids snacks, ice lollies etc but also beers and possibly wine for the ladies and tea and coffee so everyone is happy. :j

    .

The above example would be unlawful as its still classed as a 'sale' of alcohol as you cannot get the alcohol without the purchase of a ticket.

Check with the Council if they have a Temporary Event Notice. The school should also have it on display or at least available if they do have one. Chances are they dont as most schools had no idea they even needed one!

I personally wouldnt feel comfortable with beer at a sports day. You are there to support the kids not have a drink, its not a beer garden! Each to their own I guess
