All in all, I much prefer Poundworld to Poundland. They have a smaller range, but what they do have is generally good quality, more interesting, and with less WIGIG lines.

I also prefer Poundworld, and for me it is easier to get to, as there is a branch on the local retail park (so free parking :D).

My son has learning difficulties, and loves diaries and calendars, so I always buy him a diary or two from PW. Last year they had a matching diary and calendar set, which he loved.

Some of the books are good too, as well as the stationery. Poundland is better for craft stuff though - great for Brownies and Rainbows. The sequins are very cheap, and my units both love sparkly stuff :)

I've had some camping gear in the past when my boys were in Scouting. We still have most of it, although the torches had a short life.

Multi packs of chocolate are good value, although sometimes the supermarkets have them on offer as well.

Hats, gloves and socks are all good value - especially the gloves, as one of my sons loses them almost daily!

I believe that PW are now selling bras, but haven't seen them locally. I've no idea what they're like

The garden items can be really good, I bought a multipack of different herbs and some of different bulbs/corms which have all germinated and are growing well.
Also a mini clip on book light in the electrical/computer accesssory department. Really bright, much better than a far more expensive one I had previously bought xx

    Isn't Lidl £1 for 4 pints (and Morrisons £3 for 3 x 4 pints)?

From Poundland - 'Dial' shower foam by Imperial Leather. Exactly the same as Imperial Leather Foamburst which sells at £2.99+ a bottle.

I notice that the pound shops do 2 litres of milk for £1.
2 litres are not the same as 4 pints even if they look the same.
In my local shopping centre it is all of 50 yards from the pound shops to Iceland and 150 yards to ASDA.
1 litre = 1.75975 so half a litre is 0.879875 of a pint; in other words some one has taken 12% (one cupful in 8) out of the carton before selling it to you.

We also have an Aldi and Lidl a bit further away. [Not an issue for those with a bike or a pensioner's bus pass;)]

Now once upon a time Farmfoods used to do two 2 litre cartons of milk for £1.50. Those were the days - cheap bread and milk.

  • Pound shops are not always what they seem in the way of bargains.

MILK at Poundworld was found to be 1.5 litres. at Poundland 2Litres, whereas at ASda £1 for 2.27 litres (4 pints0

BREAD. At Poundland 600grams ASDA 800grams.

SUGAR started off at 1.5 Kilos now 1.2 at Poundland.

I am NOT promoting Asda since they too sell foodstuffs which have been reduced in weight. A typical example was Can't believe its not Butter spread which was 400gram instead of 500 gram for £1. Cheese is also reducing in weight, now 350gram instead of 400gram but price unchanged.

Yes there are bargains to be had, but you need to be alert to the weights and pack counts.

My local poundland has a ridiculous and painfully loud amplified screeching sound blasting out every few minutes. Its been like this for years. I expect its an alarm of some sort, but it makes shopping there very unpleasant.

Ours has the same but the shop has only been a poundland for a year or so, and the previous shop didn't have the piercing blast noise. I thought it may have been calling staff to the desks or something but never noticed any change after it sounds.

All of these things fail the "are they/can they be bought for less than £1" test. The remedy for which is to assess both qualtity and quantity against what is available elsewhere.

Not all food is poor value - Poundland used to have giant packs of Nairn's Oatcakes, and still sell 18x Chocolate Rice Crispie cake things - both of which compare well to what you can buy elsewhere.
