Some advice please

Hello

My OH had his car stopped by police to then be told he did not have the correct insurance on his car. It was impounded and he was fined, fair enough. Our fault for getting wrong insurance. We have paid the fines and he has sent of his drivers licence to get points put on.

My question is our car was up for sale before it got impounded we paid on the day and got the car back same day but the vehicle seizure proforma statement on the back says

A VEHICLE CANNOT BE SOLD OR BOUGHT AFTER IT HAS BEEN SEIZED BY POLICE.

Does this mean because our car was seized we are not allowed to sell it no more? or does it mean that the police are not allowed to buy or sell it on while its impounded?

thankyou for any help in explaining this to me :o

I think you need to get over to pepipoo, register and post there as those there are the experts concerning this.

Common sense would indicate it means it cannot be sold all the time it's with the Police (impounded).

Once it's out and back with you, it's your car again and you can do as you please with it....As long as it's legal!
  • Thankyou i did think that as that would be normal but just wanted to be sure that
This was the case as i thought maybe my car is blacklisted or something as im not
100% on all the regulations and we have never been involved with the police
So it is all new to us, however thankyou for your advice.

No, I've tried not to but I have to ask - what does "not have the correct insurance" mean ?

I'd get it if you were claiming after an accident and the car was being used for say business use but wasn't insured for that purpose but the police wouldn't care about that.
  • It means my husband had standard car insurance on his car and not an insurance for travelling to work as he works all over the place and not in 1 location.

But you are entitled to travel to and from work on standard insurance! You may not be covered to use the car FOR work however.

And how would the Police know he was driving ON company business and not just driving TO his company?

    Something isn't ringing true here.

My point exactly ! Hence why I asked the question.

Surely exclusions like not driving to work wouldn't affect a third party's right to claim against the insurance - which means it must be valid in terms of the law.

Maybe if he had two cars with insurance only on the other and thought he was covered on this one under his insurance as he is allowed to drive other cars? Maybe he didn't realise he could only use this to drive other cars that he didn't own?

Not so. Just dealing with insurance renewal at present myself. Insurers give the following options on the comparison sites and their own.

    1. SDP only
    2. SDP and commuting to one place of business
    3. SDP and business travel

Wording not exact, but you get the drift.
