Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available - Please help!

Hi

I recently purchased a Galaxy Note II on ebay (GT-N7105). When I try updating I get the error "Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available". When I check under the phone status it says "modified". Even when I connect it to my laptop the device doesn't get recognized.

Could anyone let me know why this might be the case and what I can do about it.

Many thanks

Someone has updated the phone via non-official means (even if with an official firmware).

You can only update in the same way again. Google "Samsung Odin".

Can't offer a resolution but I had the same thing on my Galaxy S2 a couple of weeks ago. Strangely sorted itself out a few days later. Do a search for that error message, there's plenty of other people reporting the same thing. I put it down to a bug in Samsung's software.

It's been rooted by the previous owner most likely, and not reset back to stock before selling on.

You're going to have to reflash it to stock via Odin if you want OTA updates.

Just for clarification I've never rooted my phone or messed with the ROM. I just started getting this message but it resolved itself and successfully installed a subsequent stock update.
