I assume she's activated the Find My Phone app to trace and/or render it useless to a third party? And also contacted the police? They can actually take a photograph of the thief using the forward facing camera if/when they attempt to turn it on, even with a different SIM.

Really, I didn't know that. My son had his iphone stolen on sunday morning and although he had 'find my phone' activated it didn't work as they turned off the phone straight away. He noticed it missing ten minutes after he last used it but couldn't trace it.
All he could do was block it but the police said it can be unlocked and sold on if passed on to people 'in the know' :(

OP - my local GAME store is now displaying 2nd hand phones in the window. Maybe check them out and see if they carry maybe a month's warranty?
  • A brand new Nexus 4 is only £239 (8gb) or £280 (16gb) direct from Google. Obviously, it's Android and nor IOS but blimey those second hand iPhone prices are crazy.

Prices for the iPhone 4S 16GB start from £215.99 on smartfonestore.com.

Another option is to find a cheap faulty/damaged phone and pay £140 for the Apple repair/replace service.

I did this a while back and got a shiny refurb but I can't help wonder when Apple will cop onto this practice? Or is £140 all that is required for Apple to still make a healthy profit? Mind you, my phone was nice and shiny with a cover on so they only charged me £55 for a replacement 3GS (at the time).

I am sure I've read the cost price on a 4S is £110 or so but if they replace with a refurb presumably the mark up is higher. They probably figure that those who want the new model will buy it anyway so they aren't losing sales by repairing the old ones and can still make a profit.

Also keying in the parts they get from the broken handset
a broken screen is probably the most common
so a refurb to Apple would be the cost of screen and new casing
