In theory, exactly the same problem can arise where you hand over £10 to a cashier and they think it was a £5. They won't typically give back your £5 until they've cashed up and prove to be up.

Don't cashiers put the note(s) they have been given in a visible place until change has been given to specifically avoid the possibility of a mistake?

Well (since OP hasn't come back yet) If it were me (and they'd attempted to fob me off with a two day wait) I would be writing to Tesco and suggesting they review their policy with regard to problems with these machines and outlining the irritation at being apparently disbelieved by the staff - even AFTER the £10 note had been identified in the till but that the staff dealing with it had then claimed it might not be mine.

I wouldn't be asking for any goodwill payment as such, though.

They should, but we all know it happens for whatever reasons; in theory a machine should be better at it than a person.
Do you really think this lady was going to buy food for two days and painkillers and medication with £10?
I think this is getting rather silly now.

But in theory yes, soap starts at about 15p, ibuprofen 32p, bottled water is 20p, pasta 30p. Try living on a tiny budget.

As I said, we don't know about the OP, they may be a millionaire, they may live off handouts, but is the right approach on this forum to dismiss questions that could be appropriate whatever?

It seems to be that more and more, people are being told they're stupid, rude, wrong etc... for asking questions or stating facts; until they ask they don't know, and isn't this forum here to ask and be treated with some kind of respect regardless?

Hand £10 note to cashier saying "That's £10" then it's less likely you'll get mistaken change for a fiver.

Just because someone doesnt know something you know, it doesnt make them stupid.

Judge a shark by its ability to climb a tree and of course it will appear stupid.
