Unfortunately the 'cheap' holiday in Turkey was true some years ago , prices have risen sharply.
As for the Euro , the prices in the bars /shops is often now displayed first in the Euro then the T.L. especially on the Med Coast.

Ps Go to the Post Office and ask for Travel Insurance for Turkey. they will correctly sell you one covering Europe !!

If I restricted my travel to places where I agreed 100% with the government, I wouldn't go anywhere.

I wouldn't even live in UK either.

You do at least have the right to free speech and not being detained without charge in the UK.
But if it's a cheap holiday in the sun you're after then Turkey is fine.
Just don't accidentally fall foul of the law - Turksih plod is not as friendly as our plod.

Local radio recently interviewed people getting of a light returning from Turkey - not one person who'd stayed in a resort even knew there'd been any trouble it was business as usual

Nothing wrong with Greece or anywhere else, apart from that awful euro that means buying a fizzy drink costs you a small fortune.

It's more expensive when we pop over the Turkish border than even the UK
OP the only thing the riots are doing in Turkey (with regards to tourists) is making our pound go further, the lira is very good at the moment.

The Lari is even better at the moment, which is why I've just stuffed holiday spending money into a Georgian bank account, as we're off to Batumi (on the Turkish border) next month.

Completely different story though, and yes, Turkey is safe in most places.

More journalists are imprisoned without trial in Turkey than anywhere else in the world.
    Really?
Hundreds of demonstrators in the current wave of protests are also being incarcerated without charge.
    Really?
Life is cheap in Turkey and human rights are even cheaper.
    Really?

    Thanks, I will.
but remember you're contributing to a political system which treats its citizens worse than you would treat your dog.
    I don't have a dog....
    Just saying.

Just saying this would have been sufficient to answer the OP's question:
Of course it is safe to visit Turkey

I'm going to Turkey for a last min get away in the next few weeks & cannot wait, it'll be my 7th time. If it wasn't safe to go, we would know about it and no planes would be flying there! As for the person saying the Turkish are horrible - how would you feel if somebody said all Brits were horrible? You can't describe one nation with the same word, from my experience you will find Turkish people that are welcoming, friendly and would give you their last dime, and then you find the opposite. Much like anywhere else!

Why would anyone in their right mind want to holiday in Turkey ?
It's a loathsome country with ugly misogynistic men preening and leering and hassling tourists in equal measure.
Do Greece instead - far nicer country with civilised people and better food.

    I beg to differ...

I have visited Turkey a few times and always enjoyed my time there.

Yes: of course there are always people attempting to sell you things, but you just need to say 'no' with a little bit of humour. And most of these people are fun anyway.

Yes: women who choose to dress inappropriately can expect a fair amount of hassle, but there is an obvious way to avoid this. Whereas in Greece, my female friends were often in situation that were not only unpleasant but at times threatening.

True, and things like the airport tax do support the government.

However, most of the money you spend will go to ordinary people, helping them to get by in very difficult times. And contact with foreigners probably helps strengthen the forces pushing for democracy, and makes it more likely that Turkey will again have a reasonable government.
