I'm on a cruise which calls at Istanbul in September.

At present, the cruise ships are calling at Istanbul, as the main tourist sites are away from the sites of the protests.

Protests aren't aimed at tourists anyway, so I currently believe Turkey is perfectly safe to visit.

It's fine right now but who knows what will happen in the near future?
I wouldn't book and risk my holiday when there are other places that show less risk

Have known three people who have holidayed in Turkey in the past three weeks , one in Istanbul who returned last w/e . B.I.L returned Thursday .
All had super hols and had no problems . The tour reps did point out the areas to avoid after dark .

Stop worrying, have a great holiday.

With that attitude surprised you ever set foot outside of your own front door.

I'm personally quite happy with this kind of attitude - because the prices of flights and accommodation to Turkey from the UK has dropped considerably for July/August, and we may be able to go this year in the school holidays for about half the price I thought we'd have to pay ;).

I travel all over the world, just back from a couple of weeks in Afghanistan, done Iraq and a shed load load of other places most people wouldn't fancy.
I still wouldn't trust my holiday to some place that is in a bit of unrest, especially when you normally have to commit your funds a good few weeks upfront.
If it all went wrong, you'd probably get your money back but would you get it in time to book somewhere else?

So yes, I do leave the house, and it's often a bit more edgy than Bodrum

Have you already booked and if so when and where ?

The main resorts will be fine, Istanbul may be best avoided at present.

I'd have a look at a map of Turkey and see where the current rioting is and where the resort(s) are that you are looking at.

Turkey is a pretty large country, for example it's almost 500 miles from Istanbul to Bodrum.

It was the same with riots in Athens. The islands were safe to visit. But if you're going to worry after you book, best to choose a different destination, nobody can say for sure that it will be OK.
  • Why would anyone in their right mind want to holiday in Turkey ?
It's a loathsome country with ugly misogynistic men preening and leering and hassling tourists in equal measure.
Do Greece instead - far nicer country with civilised people and better food.
